CV, Attitude and Job Search Strategy

CV, Attitude and Job Search Strategy

Your #CV, your #job search attitude and your job search #strategy matters. I know so many talented people whose CVs are doing them disservice.

Why is it good to have a clear #objective being spelled out at the very top of your CV:

  • Because it focuses the #reader, your hypothetical employer, on whether your objective is suitable for the company and can be met by the company, or not; and either it attracts their attention to your CV more or saves your time on another 'interview with negative result', and saves their time too :)

Quality over Quantity:

  • It’s better to have few interviews for a few suitable positions over a longer period and to have time to prepare well for them to increase your chances for #success than having an energy draining string of interviews for multiple roles just to discover that your objectives and the company objectives don’t match and the time you could of spend on something more useful were lost.
  • Additionally to lost time you are running into hearing multiple rejections and it is not healthy for anyone’s self-esteem. Our #brain works by repetition. If we hear a negative #feedback over and over again, we might start believing it instead of questioning whether we are trying to fit into wrong shoes.

Therefore, quality is golden:

  • The time in between interviews will allow you to get a good rest as nothing is worse than being a sleepy and tired person while being questioned by the interviewer.
  • It will also allow you to do a proper research about the company, to prepare a sample of work you can do for the company, whether it will be a presentation, calculations model, analysis, video, etc. depending on your line of work.

Best CVs, and answers too, are following #STAR approach and #KPI based. STAR is an acronym that stands for:

  • Situation: Set the scene and give the necessary details of your example.
  • Task: Describe what your responsibility was in that situation.
  • Action: Explain what steps you took to address it.
  • Result: Share what outcomes your actions achieved.

If you are asked a question at the interview than follow the above framework to show practical applicability of your skills.

How does the above transfer into CV, for example:

  • 'Managed well stimulation campaign on 37 oil and gas-condensate wells, achieving 40% increase in overall production’
  • 'Public speaking at 6 international Cyber Security related events ranging from 50 to 2,500+ attendees’

Review your CV and if you will find any generalisations, change it:

  • It is a matter of fact that if you will give it some thought you will be able to find few tasks which you handled well and which shows your skills in #KPIs, not simply ‘talented marketing professional’.
  • It also shows an effort the candidate put into his/her CV, and this effort counts. Why? Because it gives to the reader an understanding that this candidate will be attentive to details in the work place too, he/she will be putting an effort into his/her tasks too.

Actually, the above is a reason why sometimes someone who paid handsomely for a professional CV writing services gets invited to interviews but not getting a job:

  • As without proper preparation, at the interview itself, the interviewer is feeling cognitive dissonance between very well written CV and a candidate approach to answers.

Attitude:

  • If you want it now and you want it easy - it doesn’t always work this way. Put at effort in.
  • There are no shortcuts in value creation. CV = Your Work Value.
  • If you are short-cutting on time, you are investing into your job search, you will get MacDonalds, not a 5 Michelin Stars meal.

Often, when quantity of applications is chosen over quality of application, people think & feel like they are 'saving time' but what happens in reality quite often is:

1000 'quick, not well researched, takes 2 minutes to apply' applications over 6 months period with no result

Versus someone who took his/her time and put an effort:

100 'well researched, time invested' applications over 6 months period with a successfully landed job which gives satisfaction, not just a pay check.

Save your time - Invest your time appropriately - Don't chase after quick success - Chase after proper success.

Wish you all successful job search :)
