Cutting your Marketing Team During an Economic Downturn is Insane.

Cutting your Marketing Team During an Economic Downturn is Insane.

With State and Federal budgets being handed down across the country, the pundits have doubled-downed on their predictions of the economy facing gale-force headwinds. By no means I am qualified to say whether the experts are right or wrong.

But what we can predict is that in the face of an economic downturn, businesses will likely lay off members of the marketing team as a cost saving measure.

Now, reducing your marketing presence – the engine room that drives your company’s growth – to save a few bucks may seem like a hasty, panicked and flawed decision.

That’s because it is…?

Here are five reasons why maintaining and building up your marketing team is an investment in the face of challenging times that could reap huge gains.?

1.????Marketing is the Engine Room Driving Business Development:

Marketing plays a pivotal role in driving business growth and development before, during and after an economic downturn. Your marketing team possesses invaluable insights into customer preferences, market trends, and competitor strategies, providing crucial information for informed decision-making and strategic adaptations.?Marketing serves as the fuel for growth by enabling you to identify new markets, develop innovative products or services, and devise effective pricing and distribution strategies. Sustaining marketing efforts during tough times is essential to maintaining competitiveness and staying ahead in the market.

2.????Carpe Diem

Economic downturns often create unique opportunities for businesses to capture market share. Consumer behaviours and needs change, and smart marketing strategies can help position your brand as a solution provider. Your marketing team can identify emerging trends, adapt campaigns accordingly, and explore innovative avenues to reach customers effectively, setting your company apart from competitors and seizing unexpected opportunities.

3. Necessity is the Mother of Invention … and Digital Marketing Innovation

Downturns do not go well with business as usual or the status quo. Your company will need to get creative, and who are you most creative employees? Altogether now ... Your marketers! But you've got to get innovative.

Traditional marketing channels like television and print advertising may become more affordable due to reduced demand. Digital marketing offers cost-effective alternatives, allowing you to target specific audiences with precision. With an experienced marketing team in place, you can navigate these channels efficiently, maximizing your return on investment. So if you don’t have a digital marketing team/manager/advisor, hire them!

4. Maintaining Customer Relationships:

Laying off your marketing team can disrupt existing customer relationships, resulting in lost sales and decreased customer loyalty. Consistent communication through targeted marketing efforts assures customers that you are still in business and committed to meeting their needs. Maintaining a strong marketing presence fosters trust and retains valuable customers who may otherwise be swayed by competitors.

5. Preparing for the Future:

Economic downturns eventually pass, and when they do, businesses that have maintained marketing momentum are better positioned to seize opportunities in the recovery phase. Retaining your marketing team allows you to stay proactive, adapt to evolving market conditions, and be ready to capitalize on the upturn when it arrives.

So when things go south, remember to keep and expand your marketing presence so you can:

  • prioritise the engine room that drives your company’s growth
  • build brand resilience
  • capitalise on opportunities
  • build cost-effective marketing channels
  • nurture customer relationships
  • and prepare for the future to set the stage for long-term success.

But whatever you do, don’t cut into your marketing team!
