Cutting off the wings of Angels: Salman and Anis's tragic trajectory

Cutting off the wings of Angels: Salman and Anis's tragic trajectory

Icarus flew too close to the sun therefore he suffered. An allegory fitting for the members of Awami League. Heavyweights of their days, these giants were the centerpieces of Bangladesh, but they are now subject to nothing but ridicule.?

It was not supposed to be this way. Some of them were bright, and the country could have seen them leading it out of darkness. Unfortunately, they did not live up to their expectations.

The individual who was hit with the most number of eggs while approaching the court on the 14th of August 20204 was Anisul Huq. An illustrious mind with enviable achievements, Mr. Anisul Huq was one of Bangladesh’s brightest. A reputation tarnished by his last days in office.?

From standing first in the LLB program of University of Dhaka to leading the prosecution in the fight for bringing Bangobondhu’s killers to justice, Mr. Anisul undoubtedly made his mark. Sadly, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. As the chief prosecutor in the Peelkhana mutiny case. He was mired with controversies, and this case brought into question the leadership and motives of the ruling Awami League. Mr. Anisul, without realizing it or not, was starting to shake hands with the devil. After all, he had a close family tie with the devil’s father who was a close friend of Anisul’s own father, one of the founders of Awami Muslim league in the 1950s.

Mr. Anisul Huq increasingly aided in consolidating the dictator’s grip on institutions. He is the architect behind the decision to induct lower court judges from the executive branch of government thereby removing the oversight of The Supreme Court from the lower judiciary.?

At this precise moment, The Chief Justice of The Supreme Court, S K Sinha disagreed heavily with the executive branch’s decision, and wanted to recognize this act as unconstitutional. But as fate would have it, the chief justice too was ousted swiftly in favor of partisan hacks. He along with his conspirators systematically broke the accountability the three branches of government had over one another, and reshaped the constitution to the mess it is today.?

History will always remember him, not for his contributions in the courts, but for the legal loopholes he established just to aid the benevolent dictator maintain her grip on power. A sad ending for a bright mind.?

Another close confidant of the dictator was also caught alongside Anisul Huq. A juggernaut, A classy individual draped with silky white hair and a pristine beard, having the demeanor of a true businessman, whose power and influence over the country’s economy massively helped him catapult into a true bourgeoisie, the kind of which Karl Marx warned us about in his biblical texts.?

All the typical allegations were made against him from market tempering, stock shorting, to loan defaulting. Every imaginable act conducted by a typical multi millionaire can be linked to this great man.?

Sadly, he was caught even with all the tricks he had mustered up. The pioneer of industry in Bangladesh, Salman F Rahman truly deserves credit in creating a leading group of sixty thousand employees named BEXIMCO. This came at a cost, and allegedly the cost of not following the law to a tee.?

In 1996, he was first accused of stock fraud, as he had pre booked his shares, and from his account of the story, the sudden rise of oil prices tanked his predetermined rate, so the people lost all their bets in the first few weeks of investment.?

He went to jail following an investigation conducted by a special task force of the caretaker Government in 2006. The case evolved around BEXIMCO Holdings Lid. which alleged the use of fraud land listings to seek loans from IFIC Bank. The U.N.O? at that time submitted a 108 page investigative report alleging this fraud by BEXIMCO Holding Ltd.?

But as a typical bourgeoisie, he did not face any justice. A slap on the wrist and off he went to conduct more frauds.?

The stock market crash of 2010 and 2011 was also partially blamed on Salman F Rahman. He was the Chairman of Bangladesh Listed Companies Association back then. Therefore, he had direct control of the stock prices and control over the alleged embezzlement of investments which? he fully utilized to “rig” the game in his favor. The stock crash was so brutal that reportedly 27 small and medium investors committed suicide.?

The benevolent dictator kept all the sharks well fed, and utilized all the brains that she could corrupt to rain havoc. Just as any other dictator, she kept the bourgeoisie class close to her chest, and played her hand very well in establishing a constitution rigged by the geniuses of our time.?

The two sad men in the ‘lungis’ had an astronomical trajectory which placed them high, free from anyone’s reach. But as fate would have it, there is no place out of reach, either you come down crashing, or fly so close to the sky that you burn.?
