Cuts To PE Hours

The latest research has shown that 4,000 hours of PE are being lost from the school curriculum in state-funded secondary schools in the last academic year. This has a more significant impact on pupils than is first realised, with some affected more than others.?

Mental Health

In recent years there has been an increase on the focus of mental health concerns in young people, particularly those of school age, with many going unnoticed within their school. For many of these young people, PE can be the only activity that they partake in, which means that losing these hours can significantly impact their mental health.?

If you are concerned whether your pupil's mental health is going unnoticed, consider enrolling your Teaching Assistants and Support Staff on our Understanding Mental Health qualification to ensure they have the best knowledge and understanding to spot the signs of concern and help where possible.?

Inclusivity

In schools where there are a number of SEN students, they often do not interact with many of their peers. However, during PE there is often a sense of inclusivity, particularly in team activities. The reduction of hours may further seclude these students.?

If you require your team to have a wider SEN understanding, take a look at our Understanding Autism qualification or our Special Educational Needs CPD course.?

Exercise

In today’s society, there is a significant focus on childhood obesity. Many children do not meet the advised amount of physical activity that they should be getting each week. While the NHS is increasing the focus on combatting childhood obesity, backed by the government, schools are taking the leap to reduce PE, the subject that can help students combat obesity. Unfortunately for many, this would be the only physical activity that they may be exposed to.?

Online qualifications from The Learning College are designed to help Teaching Assistants and Support Staff to have a better knowledge and understanding not only of their role, but also the challenges that they may face. Qualifications including Understanding Autism help to offer an insight into challenges faced by those students, and guide TA’s towards aiding those students to have the best education and experience possible, and this should include PE, and help them to be included in activities that are currently being cut.?

For more information on any of our qualifications, or to discuss the needs of your team, please contact the college.
