Customizing Your LinkedIn, Part 2

Customizing Your LinkedIn, Part 2

Yesterday, I provided the step-by-step instructions for how to customize your LinkedIn URL. Now, for many, particularly those of us who have a more uncommon last name, our customized choice is easy: www.dhirubhai.net/in/dandorotik.

However, what if you are Jane Smith? Surely, this has been taken: www.dhirubhai.net/in/janesmith- as well as www....jane-smith, www...jane_smith, etc.

So, what do you do if your first choice is taken?

Here are some examples of items you can add that are still preferable to the un-customized URL:

  1. Reference to a Degree or Certification: www.dhirubhai.net/in/dandorotik-mba
  2. Reference to an Occupation: www.dhirubhai.net/in/dandorotik-HR
  3. Addition of a Middle Initial: www.dhirubhai.net/in/dan-j-dorotik

I have seen some instances where individuals will include a zip code or area code (www.dhirubhai.net/in/dandorotik-77382). Those are probably fine; on the other hand, since un-customized URLs often include numbers, you don't want to go back to that too much.

If anyone has other suggestions, please include in the Comments section below. Thanks! Oh, and if you've been affected by Tropical Storm Beryl, all the best to you over the next few days!!!
