Customer Turned Competitor

Customer Turned Competitor

In 1963, Ferruccio Lamborghini, a successful tractor manufacturer, visited Enzo Ferrari to address issues with his Ferrari's clutch. Ferrari's dismissive response, “Let me make cars. You stick to making tractors”, fueled Lamborghini's determination to build better sports cars. The rest is history.?

Similar behaviour has been observed in the AI and semiconductor ecosystem, where customers are turning competitors and vice versa. For instance, Microsoft is planning to?develop its own AI chips. With this, Microsoft joins other major cloud computing providers such as GCP and AWS, who are also developing chips for AI training and inference, reducing reliance on NVIDIA’s products and services. But, at the same time, these cloud providers also promote NVIDIA GPUs for their enterprise customers.

This is also known as ‘compete and cooperate’ aka co-opetition with your customers – a well-known model in the tech industry. For instance, chip designer Arm, which is predominantly into selling IP to other chip manufacturers, is now making its own?prototype semiconductor?for mobile devices, laptops and other electronics. This means it directly competes with its customer Qualcomm, MediaTek, and others, alongside selling IP licences to them.?

Meanwhile, Samsung-Qualcomm, also have something similar going on, where Samsung buys the best-in-class chips from Qualcomm, and in return, Qualcomm gives some foundry business to Samsung. Even NVIDIA, for example, cooperates with Intel server CPUs because their GPUs have to work very closely with Intel x86 systems, but at the same time, it competes with Intel in AI and other segments.?
