This month we talk to one of our longest standing customers, the Sussex based global charity, International Animal Rescue.?
How do Waste Paper Solutions support International Animal Rescue?
International Animal Rescue (IAR) are based in Uckfield, East Sussex and have been operational since 1989. They are?an animal protection and conservation non-profit organisation that comes to the aid of suffering animals with hands-on rescue and rehabilitation and the protection of wildlife habitats. Over the years the focus of their work has moved from a sanctuary based in Devon to a global organisation protecting animals as far afield as India and Indonesia.?
Animal welfare and environmental protection issues incredibly close to our hearts, and we wanted to feel like we could directly support their efforts. Whilst we can’t necessarily help them to take care of the animals, we can provide them with our specialised service free of charge which alleviates some of the cost of day to day operations.
?We spoke to Jess Wooler from the charity about her role, their current projects and challenges and their partnership with Waste Paper Solutions;
"Hi Jess! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us about the wonderful work you do at International Animal Rescue. Could you tell us a bit about how the charity started?"
"International Animal Rescue (IAR) was established in 1989 to relieve the suffering of animals at home and abroad. We initially focused on the plight of starving stray dogs in India and set up a centre for the sterilisation and treatment of strays in Goa. In 2002 IAR became involved in the campaign to end the practice of dancing bears in India and we are extremely proud to have played a leading role in ending that barbaric trade in 2009. Since those early days, IAR has grown and been able to take on projects in Indonesia (Orangutan and slow loris conservation), Armenia (the rescue and rehabilitation of caged brown bears) and Costa Rica (rescue, rehabilitation and release of howler monkeys and other wildlife.) Nowadays, wildlife the world over is under huge pressure from human activity which has devastated natural habitats and pushed many species to the brink of extinction. In response to this crisis, IAR has broadened its remit to include habitat protection and environmental conservation as vital components of our work. Our teams in the field carry out extensive education and outreach programmes, empowering local communities to value and cherish the wildlife that lives alongside them and the natural environment that sustains them. As explained by Karmele L Sanchez, IAR Indonesia’s Programme Director: “In order to rescue animals, first you have to rescue people.” We tackle the root causes of animal protection issues in order to find lasting solutions that will benefit animals, people and the environment".
"What is your current or most demanding project?"
"Our Orangutan conservation project in West Borneo, Indonesia. Orangutans are Critically Endangered. Their numbers have plummeted in recent years because of habitat loss and illegal hunting. IAR runs a conservation centre for rescued Orangutans where they undergo years of rehabilitation before being reintroduced into the wild. At the same time, we work to protect and replenish the rainforest that is home to the Orangutans. We work with indigenous communities, local government authorities and enforcement agencies, as well as other local groups, to protect and preserve remaining Orangutan populations and the habitat they need to survive."
"What is the best part about working for International Animal Rescue??"
"By working at IAR I feel I can make a real difference on issues that are important to me – animal and environmental protection and conservation. I’ve also been privileged to visit our project in Armenia and seen at first hand the amazing work we’re doing rescuing caged bears. I have a lot of contact on the phone with our supporters so it’s great to be able to tell them what an incredible difference their donations are making to animals’ lives."
