Customer Guide: Prove Wallet Ownership with Ledger and the AOPP Portal

Regulatory changes require digital asset providers (crypto exchanges) operating in jurisdictions where the Travel Rule is enforced - like the EU, UK, Switzerland, and others - to verify their customers' ownership of self-hosted wallets (for example, a Ledger) before allowing transactions in certain cases. Non-compliance can lead to hefty fines or even the permanent closure of the exchange.?

Proving ownership of a specific wallet address is fast and secure using the AOPP Portal (accessed via a link your digital asset provider will send you).?


Here’s how to show your exchange that you own your wallet.??

When you initiate a deposit or withdrawal to your self-hosted wallet (your Ledger), your digital asset provider will direct you to the AOPP Portal to confirm ownership before processing the transaction. This will involve sharing a link with you.?


Step 1

Connect your Ledger device to your computer and enter your PIN to unlock it. In your Ledger, select the asset type you want to verify ownership of (e.g., Bitcoin).

Step 2

Using the link your digital asset provider shared with you, access the AOPP Portal. In the Portal, choose your wallet type by selecting the Ledger logo from the available options.

Once you select Ledger, your browser may prompt you to allow a connection to your device. Choose your Ledger model (e.g., Nano S) and click "Connect" to authorise this connection.?

This step is only required the first time you connect your device.

Step 4

Follow the instructions on your Ledger device, where you’ll see a "Sign Message" text. Use the Next button on your device to review the message. Continue pressing Next until the "Sign Message" prompt appears.

Sign the message by simultaneously pressing both buttons on your Ledger.

Step 6

That’s it! Once the compliance process is successfully completed, your digital asset provider will guide you through the following steps to complete your transaction.
