Custom Lighting Design. A Post about Us and What We Do....

I post enough other stuff, so I thought I'd finally put up an article about our lamp design business- which by the way, celebrates it's 28th year. Thanks in advance for reading! :)

If you're reading this article, chances are you're an architect or interior designer and may be the person I'm writing for. If so, herein lies my pitch.

As a boutique studio, we can take some very big design chances- gambles on designs that large lighting corporations simply cannot afford to do. We can do this because we don't need to re-tool and re-evaluate our line. For large corporations, that costs a bloody fortune and a great deal of effort. Big corporations must hang their hats on designs that are guaranteed to sell- at least sell enough to make a respectable profit. This means appealing to the "known" and risk-free styles that consumers are already comfortable with. No risk. No revolution. Safe and Profitable.

However, our strength is the ability to 'zig' when others 'zag'. After all, it wouldn't make any sense for us to create lamps that are so very similar in design to what everyone else is offering. Now 28 years after we started our company, it's impossible to discern what lamps are produced by what manufacturers. The sameness in design is overwhelming. And that's exactly why we needed to be different. And as such, we can be called upon by architects and decorators to explore unseen opportunities for lighting projects. We can experiment. Vigorously. We've had the privilege of working with the world's top architects, decorators and celebrity clients. This affords us a deep well of experience to draw upon and also the confidence to go beyond the design standards of the day.

With our experience, we are positioned to accommodate all manner of lighting needs- no matter how unusual or unique those requirements may be. And when you communicate with us regarding the details and strict specifics of a project, you speak with me-directly! The important and often sublime design points of a project are not subject to the dreaded game of "telephone" and then lost in translation.

But designing a successful lamp or lighting fixture incurs more than just providing a beautiful, finished product. Considering the details of the specific installation: the physical placement and space dimensions, ambient and task lighting needs and the unique surface mounting profiles all play into the final fixture design.

We customize to fill in all of the special details that, "out of the box" lighting fixtures simply can't accommodate. Custom mounting, color matching and color duplication for wood, metal and shade materials. Perfect, flawless faux finishes. Custom configurations and sizes. All is possible and very welcomed.

We also take into consideration the needs of the Master Electrician who is "on-site". They are the final person who, after the long and expensive chain of architects, specifiers, designers and contractors, perform the final and most important operation: The Installation. It's our job at Donovan Design to make sure that it goes perfectly smooth by providing everything the Master Electrician needs for a quick and uncompromised installation.

28 years is a great deal of professional lighting experience and our designs are at the very forefront of the industry- Ask anyone in the industry. They know us. We welcome all questions you may have about our work and we would love to bid on your next project!

Best regards to all for the New Year and thank you for reading.
