Custom Dimensions and Custom Metrics

Custom Dimensions and Custom Metrics

Custom dimensions and custom metrics in Google Analytics4 (GA) allow you to track additional data points beyond the default data that GA4 tracks out of the box.

Custom dimensions are non-aggregated data points that can be associated with a hit, session, or user. They can be used to track information such as the user's account type, the page's author, or the version of the product that the user is using.

Custom metrics, on the other hand, are numerical data points that can be aggregated. They can be used to track information such as the number of times a button is clicked, the total value of a transaction, or the time spent on a page.

The Benefits of Custom Dimensions & Metrics

Custom dimensions and metrics provide marketers with an unprecedented level of insight into their customers' behavior. This allows them to make more informed decisions about how best to target their campaigns, optimize their websites, and develop better products and services for their customers. Additionally, using custom dimensions and metrics can help marketers gain a better understanding of how different channels interact with one another—for instance, whether organic search traffic is more likely to convert than paid search traffic—and use this information to maximize ROI across multiple channels.

Set up Custom Dimensions and Custom Metrics :

  1. Sign into Google Analytics.
  2. Click?Admin, and navigate to the?property to which you want to add custom dimensions.
  3. In the?PROPERTY?column, click?Custom Definitions
  4. Then click on "Custom Dimensions" or "Custom Metrics".
  5. To create a custom dimension, click the "Create Custom Dimension" button, then enter a name and description for the dimension. You'll also need to specify the scope of the dimension, which determines when and how the dimension will be recorded.
  6. To create a custom metric, click the "Create Custom Metric" button, then enter a name and description for the metric. You'll also need to specify the type of the metric, which determines how the metric will be calculated and displayed in your reports.
  7. Once you've created your custom dimension or metric, you'll need to implement it in your website's code. In GA4, custom dimensions and metrics are passed to Google Analytics using the gtag.js library. You'll need to add code to your website to send data to GA4 for each custom dimension or metric that you've created.
  8. Finally, you'll need to configure your GA4 reports to display the data collected by your custom dimensions and metrics. This can be done by creating custom reports or modifying the existing reports in GA4.

Conclusion:

Custom dimensions and metrics are powerful tools for gaining additional insights into your website or app user behavior. By using them, you can better understand how different channels interact with one another, optimize your campaigns for maximum ROI, and make more informed decisions about how best to target your audience. With the right technical know-how (or the help of an experienced third-party service) setting up custom dimensions and metrics is easy—so don't miss out on the chance to gain valuable insights about your customers.
