The curse of the control freak
Business owners are the worst in the world for not letting go of their business for others to manage. I used to be like that myself.
The thing is, if you don't let go and you are integral to the business, then you don't even have a business, you have a job and are self employed.
People don't like hearing that. They think as they employ 5 people or their turnover is 500k they must have a business, its just not true.
Ive said for years, go away for 3 months and have nothing to do with your business, no contact, no emails, no calls.... nothing.
If you come back and the sh!t has hit the fan, the bills haven't been paid, staff haven't turned in for work, loads of complaints, then you are self employed.
If, however, you come back and the business is running the same if not better then you have a truly systemised and well ran business.
The first step to getting a business instead of a job, is to have the mindset that in order to grow you need to give stuff away - Counter productive right?
How can i give things away to my staff in order for the business to grow, i'm much better at it than them?
- if you don't give things to your staff to do then they will never grow.
- If they don't grow you will always be in the same position
- If your staff cant take on what you do then you need to train them
- If after training they still cant do the actions, then you have the wrong staff.
It's really simple when you break it down - You need to recruit, train and delegate to the right people.
If you don't, you will always have a job and good luck with that, i don't know a single person who set up their business to work harder for less money.
Which one are you? Self employed or business owner?

4 年Another interesting point because for one it is me - to a point. It’s not all bad though, it depends on your wants and needs, sometimes a one office with a controller can be more “successful” than a multi branch. Do you want an empire and be firefighting with staffing or do you want to be able to sleep at night knowing you have everything under control and earning a comfortable living. This doesn’t just apply to owners, managers can be just as bad, if not worse, keeping their staff down in fear they may take over their job. A complicated old issue! Also one of the largest agencies owner/CEO stepped down 2 or 3 years ago, guess what, he’s back.

4 年This thinking chimes with another great article I saw recently by Gymshark's owner who decided to give away his position as CEO...https://www.benfrancis.com/article/why-i-stepped-down-as-gymshark-ceo/ Maybe one step too far John Paul?!! :)
