Have you heard of The Curse of Bookzilla?
Of course not. I just made it up.
You’ve heard of Bridezilla, right? Where Brides go a little gaga before the big event?
Well, it’s pretty much the same with authors leading up to the publishing of their books.
You may have experienced it, or seen it in somebody else.
Signs of being hit by The Curse of Bookzilla include:
- Suddenly hating everything about your book
- Completing it to 75-95% and then getting bored of it
- ‘Life’ getting in the way of the completion of the book
- You stop talking about your book
- You allow other people and circumstances to take you off track
- You may feel anger or resentment towards the people trying to help you
- You may find yourself getting ill or injured
- You may find yourself getting involved in drama and arguments that distract you from your book
My clients experience this all the time – it's actually one of the main things they need support with.
Because if you can't get past this monster... you may as well not have started in the first place
Everyone knows they need guidance on preparation, writing, launch, the technical stuff and all that jazz, but not many expect Bookzilla to be turning up and smashing their dreams of being an author to pieces!
So, when Bookzilla hits, here are my top 3 tips to beat it.
1. Become aware of what's happening and journal/meditate on what the real issue is. What could happen when it's released? What's going on beneath the surface?
2. Take a few days away from your book to clear your head. But, and this is important, schedule a time to come back and stick to it!
3. Hire a book coach or reach out to a friend who will understand. Writing a book is a hugely transformational experience and can be incredibly challenging without the right support.
