Iowa Tornadoes

The American Red Cross is conducting door-to-door visits to make sure those affected by the Iowa Tornadoes are aware of recovery resources and receiving the assistance they need to get back on their feet.

AT-A-GLANCE

On July 19, tornadoes that ripped through Central Iowa damaged hundreds of homes. As residents continue their recovery from the destruction of these tornadoes, Red Cross recovery teams have been meeting one-on-one with affected individuals to assess next steps.

  • As a result, the Red Cross has opened 250 cases that will provide support to people in need.
  • Red Cross caseworkers have reached a majority of those affected for initial follow-up and are continuing to reach out and review new cases as they are received.
  • These recovery teams have incorporated translators from local organizations to provide access to as many individuals as possible.

The Red Cross shelter at the local community center closed on Sunday night, as initial response to this disaster leads into recovery.

  • Meals, snacks and relief supplies continue to be distributed around the community, as needed.
  • Collaboration with community partners continues. Most recently, a long-term recovery planning meeting was held with local community leaders.

In addition to the recovery work now taking place throughout the community, the Red Cross continues working alongside partners to provide immediate relief to residents in the form of food, health services and clean-up kits.

Over the weekend, Red Cross response and recovery services continued alongside community partners.
