Current Top Interior Decoration Trends 2023

When designing your ideal space, whether you are an investor or a homeowner, decisions in simple décor can go a long way. Trending looks in the first few years of the 2020s have distinguished themselves from decades prior, with the use of certain colors, materials, lighting, aesthetics, and more. Today, we will be discussing some of the current home décor trends, contrasted with some trends of the past.?

The 2020s have shown that there are two sides to the color coin: neutrals and bright, sunny shades. What we are seeing people run away from is the grey everything: light grey walls, grey furniture, silver dressers, you name it. Popular in the neutrals category are earth-tones, soft browns, white, and beige.?

The brighter, sunny side appears to be inspired by reimagined vintage trends. Many people gather thrifted pieces and can tastefully toss them together, creating a modern bohemian aesthetic for their gone. It is believed that another source of inspiration for this trend came from actress Dakota Johnson’s appearance on Architectural Digest, where she showed off her sage green kitchen that caught the eyes of many. Abstract art pieces are also common in these bright homes, ranging from framed art to sculptures and even sculptural lamps. These two groups often clash with each other, with design bloggers calling the children of neutral homes “sad beige baby” and the colorful homes seen as tacky.?

Furniture seems to be straying away from modern-geometric pieces, that usually came with a cool-grey color palette. Similar to what I mentioned with colorful homes, many people are incorporating vintage statement pieces that add personality and warmth into their space. A new emphasis on cost-efficiency and sustainability have inspired these trends. It is encouraged to invest in timeless pieces (and vintage pieces are technically timeless since their tine has not ended). In contrast with the direction interior design appeared to be going in the late 2010s, with sharp geographic shapes and straight lines, the 2020s have inspired a shift to curvier, groovier aesthetics. People are turning away from sterile looking homes, reminiscent of hospitals or an office building, and are now showing interest in cozier, colorful spaces.

Aside from the popularity of colorful kitchens, bathrooms are also a big spot for expressing color. It is common to see colorful statement tiles. Tiles of different shapes and colors are often seen on the walls near the vanity or on the floor. Something this emerging style has in common with its more modern opponent is the use of marble. Marble has been going steady in bathroom vanities for a long time now, and it appears to be here to stay. This time around, however, these colorful bathrooms tend to use a more muted marble design rather than a louder grey look. Two other aspects of the bathroom are also becoming more evident. First, mirrors tend to be smaller and framed, as opposed to the wider, full-length mirrors of the early 2000s. The other striking aspect is the free-standing tub. It seems that bathtubs are no longer sucked in and crammed to one wall; there seems to be a theme of maximizing the use of the available space.??

Finally, people are incorporating artificial and live plants into their home designs. The earth-tones are being elevated by the greenery that plants offer. Flowers aren't usually talked about at length. The most common plants used in homes now are cacti, aloe, succulents, bamboo palm, various ferns, and a few others. Whether on your bookshelf, your windowsill, hanging around your bathroom, or potted in the corner of your kitchen, plants can add brightness and life to your space. Indoor plants bring many health benefits according to Horticulture Experts and boost your health in ways you probably don’t even realize. For instance, a very popular Bromeliad plant, which compliments any design, helps rid the air of common toxins and indoor pollutants such as formaldehyde and benzene. In fact, one study found that the bromeliad plant removed more than 80 percent of six volatile organic compounds (out of eight studied) in a 12-hour period, while the dracaena plant removed 94 percent of acetone (the pungent compound in many nail polish removers).

Sansevieria or snake plant is another timeless classic of interior decoration.

There is one thing to note: plants need care. While it might not have the same effect, faux plants may be your best bet if you are notorious for murdering your plants.?

The overall theme in common interior design practices tend to be two things: sustainability sure, but then doing what you want and will make you happy. The modern, grey, geometric aesthetic of the 2010s was difficult for some people to subscribe to and they are glad to see that trend lose flavor. Afterall, it is your home, and you can define what is homey enough for you. Leave the grey for the office space and rental units.
