About the current state of Agile in Belgium

In Belgium, as in many other places, there is a growing recognition that numerous companies face challenges in achieving authentic Agile adoption. Conversations with leaders, PMO team members, and experts reveal challenges in achieving genuine agility.

While widely acknowledged as an issue, delving into an honest conversation about the authentic state of agility within teams or companies proves challenging. This is primarily due to the entrenched expectation of a prevailing Scrum implementation, where any deviations are met with resistance. In essence, strict adherence to Scrum or other frameworks without aligning with Agile principles can lead to suboptimal outcomes, contradicting the fundamental essence of agility. But this is not the main issue.

Restructuring Agile teams is a prevalent solution across companies. However, the prevailing approach involves hiring individuals with more Scrum and Agile certifications and experience. While a high level of Scrum and Agile knowledge is crucial, I argue that resolving these issues requires a different strategy.

The introduction of new Agile certificates by the Scrum authorities is seen by many as a potential remedy. However, I contend that another critical element, not easily learned or taught, exists. This elusive concept is the catalyst for building cohesive, motivated teams that remain robust even without a specific Agile implementation at the team level.

What exactly am I referring to? I am referring to the person supporting or guiding the team – be it a trainer, manager, coach or Scrum Master. The personality and personal approach of such a team supporter radiates towards the team, creating a certain vibe that allows the team to form cohesive connections and become a high-performing, motivated unit. This person can be supported by the organization, but what's crucial is the person, not the certificates they hold.

In essence, more and better certificates alone won't resolve the problem. The person supporting the team as an Agile Project Manager or Scrum Master is vital, and their impact transcends the certificates they possess. While a deep knowledge and experience in Agile frameworks and principles are important, it's that person's qualities and personal approach that truly make the difference.
