? The Current: The latest from National Grid UK

This month's big news from National Grid UK and the UK energy industry - all in one place.

The most significant step forward in UK transmission for a generation

From 2026 to 2031, we plan to nearly double the amount of power we can flow across the country, deliver the world’s longest offshore domestic transmission link, and increase our overall network length by 1,100km (equating to almost 10%). Within the same time period, we also aim to grow our workforce by 50%, with 1,100 more apprentices, graduates and trainees.

Starting 2025 on a high

The world’s biggest offshore wind farm. The UK’s largest transmission-connected battery. And a new interconnector between the UK and Ireland.

2024 was a busy and successful year for engineering teams within National Grid Electricity Transmission. In total, nearly 3GW of energy projects were plugged into our network.

We take a look back at the highlights from 2024...

Drones are game-changers for network inspections

Drones help us to inspect parts of the UK electricity network that are more difficult to reach, making infrastructure surveys much safer for National Grid engineers to carry out - and also more cost-effective for the consumer.

Up until now, aviation regulations required drone pilots to be onsite with their drone and fly it within their ‘visual line of sight’ (VLOS) at all times. This has made it challenging to operate drones at scale - for example, to conduct inspections over a large area with multiple pylons.

But a recent change in aviation policy, together with pioneering developments in autonomous flight technology, has unlocked the opportunity for us to remotely operate fleets of autonomous drones that can fly beyond visual line of sight.

Boosting energy ambition in the Midlands

The Midlands is central to achieving the Government’s ambition to become a clean energy superpower, with £20bn of investment potential and the opportunity to create nearly 200,000 green jobs by 2041.

The region is home to a quarter of the UK’s fossil fuel generation capacity and has a high concentration of energy-intensive industries, but also has England’s highest regional rate of fuel poverty.

One of our innovation projects is due to play a key part in delivering secure, low-carbon energy and unlocking economic growth in the Midlands...

The evolution of UK energy

You loved this animated infographic last month - so much so that it was our most-engaged LinkedIn post ever. We also posted an updated version a few weeks later.

Energy use is a story of reinvention and the next chapter is already underway, through the largest overhaul of the UK electricity grid in generations.

The power of community

National Grid Electricity Distribution is now a member of Community Energy Wales and Community Energy England. What does this mean? Ben Ferguson and Leanne Wood, from Community Energy Wales, put it perfectly: "A close link between community energy organisations and district network operators is vital to ensure communities are at the heart of the future energy system."
