The Currency of Time

There's a point in each person's life when they begin to realize that time is moving much faster than it is slower. When we are kids, life can't go fast enough. We wish with all of our might that we can become older so we can drive, go to college and so much more. We wish away the days because waiting for something a week from now seems like a lifetime. However, when you get older all you want to do is slow time down. You want savor life much more and remember what it was like when the days and the years crept by like a never ending procession of cars in a parade.

As a 38 year old man, I can appreciate time way more now than I could as a child. We grow, our circumstances change, people move on to other phases of their lives and life becomes a speedway towards the latter part of our lives. Our time on earth, which has existed for so long, is very short. At one point your heart began to beat in your mother's womb and at one point it won't anymore.

That's why its so very important to respect time as a currency. Remember the beginnings and endings to things and be grateful for what you have. While there are many who may disagree with me, I believe there is so much good in this world. Everyday I choose to see the beauty in my child's face, my wife's generosity and loyalty, my staff's laughter and my parents/brother's continued faith in me as human being. I see light because I choose to see light.

Now listen, we all have to make a living to support ourselves and our families. No one can deny that. Money is not everything, but it helps. Still, no amount of money can buy time. Time has no monetary value. It can't be purchased to the highest bidder. It can't be bargained for or made to seem less valuable than it is.

As the General Manager of a luxury residential fitness facility I am constantly around individuals with massive sums of wealth. However, we are on the same playing field when it comes to time. Neither of us can afford it and each of us must respect and value it. It is the closest thing to a slam dunk agreement among human beings. Time crosses socioeconomic status, religion, gender, occupations and so on and so forth. Time has no prejudice. It bears no favorites. It just keeps grinding away, never taking a break. It doesn't sleep, eat, rest or celebrate. It just keeps it moving.

Which is why we must always be cognizant of the power of time and how we can't get it back ever in our lives. Why is this important? Because in the spectrum of our work and personal lives, we must live in a way that cherishes the many milestones throughout time. Whether its the birth of your child, a new job you've always wanted, falling in love, learning something amazing or traveling to beautiful places...you should aim to make enjoying your life and time that goes with it as much as possible while also being responsible.

And if you don't? Time will slip away. Time values progress. Its keeps it moving forward. Doesn't matter if you are moving forward in doing positive things or negative things to time. Time will continue to march to the unending beat of eternity. It will never stop. So, aren't you better off doing something beautiful, fun, daring and important with your life vs. doing nothing?

The choice is simple for me every time I take my daughter to school, go to happy hour with my staff, go on a wonderful vacation with my wife or reminisce with my parents and brother. I strive to live authentically and with joy in my heart each day. I do my best to share that with as many of you as possible here on LinkedIn. Choose joy and a full life vs. negativity and unimportant causes that don't grow you. You will love your life much more.

Until next time...

This has been on my mind quite a bit lately as I feel like it slips away faster and faster every day. Thanks for the great read Darian!

Thanks for the insightful read. We share your perspective on time and agree that it's non-bias to socioeconomic, gender, race and status. We may not all start life economically or socially equal, but we are all given an equal amount of time per day to make our lives just the way we want it to be.
