A Currency that is the Foundation of All Relationships

“Money is the currency of transactions and trust is the currency of interactions."?~ Rachel Botsman
Dear Friend,
The wave of cryptocurrency, blockchain, NFTs, and Web 3.0 overwhelms me. I am the last of GenX, born in 1985, and what came after my generation were the millennials! Now we can talk all about cryptocurrency and decentralized?economies but today I am going to talk about a currency that is even more critical and very expensive - the currency of trust!?
Trust is central to all human relationships. To every human yearning. Whether it is a personal relationship or a business one, whether it is politics or the person next door. Whether it is your surgeon performing brain surgery or the pilot flying the plane!?
Recall your last interaction with your child or your niece who is 5 years old. Do you recall throwing them into the air and then catching them? What is their reaction to it? Have you seen them cry? I have raised two boys, who are now 11 and 8, and every time I did this to them or to other children, I saw a sense of liberation. The child would spread their arms, laugh wholeheartedly and assume as if they were flying. The key currency there is trust. The child trusts you completely and believes that you will not drop them.?
As we grow up, our ability to trust starts to erode. We have had experiences where someone broke our trust. Whether it was a parent who did not show up for that stage performance or the manager who did not give you the promised appraisal. Whether it was that partner who broke your heart or a child who did not support the ailing parents. In each of these situations, trust was broken.?
Trust drives so many relationships, occurrences, businesses, user experiences and more that it is a vital, vital aspect to be reflected upon. I am not going to give you any magical advice today but only one thing that you can do to make sure that every interaction that you are part of, strengthens the trust and does not weaken it. When you do this over time, every ounce of trust that you have shared with the other party will come back to you and bring joy!?
Elevate Your Do to Say Ratio?
Aesop said, "When all is said and done, more is said than done."?
During conversations, we tend to overpromise. Here are a few examples - “We should have lunch next week.” “Let’s have a cup of coffee over the weekend.” “I will get the bulb fixed tomorrow.” “I will definitely watch the video you recommended.” “Let’s connect over a call next week.”?
We say such statements but then end up not living up to them. And if the other person is paying attention, which I hope they are, then with every statement, your Do to Say Ratio goes down. If you aspire to build trust and strengthen your relationships, then make sure you follow a regular rhythm of say, do, say, do and not say, say, do, say, say, say, do! It might hurt you more than you realize when you make those statements in the moment.?
Let’s turn the lens towards you then.?How are you doing on your Do to Say ratio? What one behavior shift can you make to become better at building trust??Do share your thoughts in the comments below and let’s have a conversation. I do read and respond to every message that comes my way and I am not just saying it, I actually do it. :)?
Warmly,?
Utkarsh

2 年Love this, very well done (and written), dear Utkarsh! Beautiful. May I point you and the readers to Covey's book "The speed of trust"? It is highly relevant to this discussion!

2 年The most interesting thing is that if all external indicators of trust are positive, but your internal indicator is negative, then it is really difficult to over-ride the internal warning. So external trust that doesn't work with the internal trust is not of much use.
