Be Curious, Not Competitive

Be Curious, Not Competitive

When you position yourself as superior or inferior to someone, an invisible wall emerges—a barrier built of ego, insecurity, or preconceived notions, this wall isn’t just psychological; it’s a lost opportunity to connect, collaborate, and truly understand. Genuine connection begins when you approach others as equals.

The Illusion of Hierarchies

Hierarchies are everywhere. Titles, accomplishments, and social status often shape how you perceive others—and yourself. These structures may help organize your world, but they can distort interactions. When you feel superior, you risk dismissing the other person’s value. When you feel inferior, you minimize your worth. Either way, the potential for genuine connection disappears.

Treat Them Like an Old Friend

When you run into an old friend you don’t overthink the interaction or hide behind a facade. Instead, you let your guard down because you trust they will do the same. You create space for honest dialogue and mutual respect. You don’t have to assume false familiarity, but embracing trust and curiosity can transform your relationships.

Why Letting Your Guard Down Works

People mirror energy. When you approach someone with authenticity, they are likely to respond in kind. Focusing on shared humanity rather than differences in status or ability makes interactions flow naturally. Letting your guard down shows vulnerability—a powerful way to build trust and connection.

Steps to Break the Wall

  1. Shift Your Mindset: Before engaging with someone, take a moment to set aside judgments about your or their relative worth.
  2. Practice Empathy: Ask yourself, “What might their story be?” Understanding their perspective fosters humility and reduces bias.
  3. Be Curious, Not Competitive: Instead of comparing achievements, focus on learning from their experiences.
  4. Stay Present: Let go of past insecurities or future expectations. Being fully in the moment allows for a deeper connection.

When you let your guard down, you’ll discover they’re more likely to do the same. And that’s where connection begins.

Excellent read, Rick! The idea of curiosity and a mindset shift resonated with me—probably the only survival kit we’ll need for the whirlwind of changes ahead (geopolitics, tech, economy, climate, emerging Asian powers… take your pick). Listening and adaptability are the new competitive edge! UK Business Advisors

Thanks Rick Mans, your shorts are always a great way to start the day! Concluding with the last points hammers home the Humanist messages. I would even paraphrase it with the Golden Rule: "Do unto others..."
