The Curious Case of Meeting Your Future Self: Unexpected Teachers

In this curious case of navigation, I find myself reflecting on a transformative cross-country trip—a journey that marked a pivotal moment in my life. Picture this: my college roommate, Heather, and I packed into her trusty car, ready to embark on an adventure from Connecticut to California and then back again. With a roadmap in hand (this was before smart phones) and two open hearts, we set off into the unknown. As I pressed my forehead against the passenger-side window, watching the landscape shift, I realized this was more than a road trip. This was a deep dive into self-discovery, guided by an unexpected teacher.

The Path We Traveled

Our trip was a vibrant tapestry of excitement and exploration, filled with the promise of adventure and the thrill of the unknown. We set out from Connecticut, eager to create memories that would last a lifetime. Our first stop in Baltimore was a nostalgic reunion with our old boss from New Rochelle, who welcomed us with open arms and shared stories that transported us back to our early workdays. This rekindling of connections infused our journey with a sense of warmth, safety and familiarity.

Continuing south, we made our way to Atlanta, where we were greeted by friends who embodied the Southern spirit of hospitality. Their laughter and stories echoed through the warm nights, reminding us of the bonds we had forged during our college years. From there, we journeyed to the sunny Florida panhandle and vibrant New Orleans, each destination a new chapter in our unfolding adventure.

As we traveled west across the South, a memorable detour in Lafayette led us to a Radio Shack where the dedicated employees went above and beyond, staying open long after closing to help us solder a crucial tool that would allow us to connect our CD player to the car’s lighter—a small triumph that spoke volumes about resourcefulness and community. It was moments like these that highlighted the kindness of strangers and the unexpected joy found in the simplest acts of support.

We camped under the stars in remote campgrounds, sharing late-night conversations about our dreams and fears, and stayed in budget motels that became temporary homes filled with laughter and late-night snacks. There were even nights we spent in the car, determined to explore as much as we could. Along the way, we learned that our spontaneous stops—like finally doing laundry in Casa Grande or the night we drove north along the California coast hoping to find a place to stay only to wind up back in San Diego as the sun came up catching winks in a movie theater before we could land in a hotel—often turned out to be more memorable than the meticulously planned destinations. Each new city, every stretch of highway, and all the experiences in between nudged us further from our college days and closer to adulthood, reshaping our identities as we embraced the journey of self-discovery together.

Lessons from an Unexpected Teacher

Heather didn’t hold any formal title or carry any status. She was simply my best friend, and that summer after we graduated from college, she became one of my greatest teachers. With each mile we traveled, her courage, kindness, and resilience spoke louder than any lecture could. The journey was filled with challenges—navigating unfamiliar highways, tackling personal fears, and pushing beyond our comfort zones. Heather’s spirit truly shone in those moments of uncertainty. She met every obstacle with confidence, teaching me by example that courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s the decision to face it, one mile at a time.

Through that trip, Heather showed me the power of small acts: the warmth of a kind word, the way empathy can bridge gaps, and how joy can be found even in the most trying situations. She turned that car ride into a masterclass in the values I strive to embody daily—kindness, empathy, and a resilient joy. Somewhere between Connecticut and California, I began to let go of self-doubt and to find the self-acceptance and courage I didn’t yet know I had.

Unexpected Lessons that Shaped My Career

What my younger self couldn’t know then was how deeply these lessons would shape my life. As I look back from where I am now, working at the CDC, I find myself calling on Heather’s unassuming wisdom. In moments of professional uncertainty, I think of her infectious laughter, her quiet assurance, and her resilience as we faced the unknown together. Those qualities became tools that helped prepare me for the twists and turns I would face in my career, teaching me that some of the most enduring forms of courage and kindness often come from the people we least expect.

For me, it was people like Heather—those who stepped into my life quietly and left an indelible mark. It was the mentors I found at the CDC and the unique perspective my Connecticut roots provided as I settled into life in Atlanta.
