Curious case of Bitter Pills! To have or not to have?

#RDWiSE series 2

All of us have swallowed bitter pills at some time or the other. There are times we know it’s headed our way, but occasionally we are caught unawares. Most Indian kids have grown up hearing "Kadwi cheezen sehat ke liye acchi hoti hain**" or some native variant of this at their dinner table.

**Bitter things are good for health

Lil me would counter every time, no one would eat these things if not for the so called?healthy?tag. Alas! I could never escape it, rather nothing could change the fate of that karela (bitter gourd ) on my plate. But are all?Bitter?pills essential ? The way all that glitters is not gold same holds true for all that’s bitter isn’t necessarily good for you.

You must be wondering, How do I segregate ?How do I identify if it is need of the hour or should I skip it ?

#RDWiSE?to your rescue…over the years working with and meeting diverse set people in personal and professional life, I have observed most important aspect of the bitter pill is the?source, the person serving it.

Based on my experience and listening to stories of several others, the source can be classified into two broad categories. For ease of understanding I take liberty of drawing parallels from the famous Japanese animation series?Type Doremon?and?Type Nobita.

Type Doremon

  1. Takes ownership - has internal locus of control. Understands and is aware of his/her circle of influence.
  2. Empowers - people around him/ her, but always has their back.
  3. Is bold and blunt - gives feedback immediately, calls spade a spade. These people are stern, they don’t mince?words.
  4. Problem Solvers - They get things done, they have high performance standards for self and people around them.
  5. Asks the right questions - and always end with how can they enable you.
  6. Last but not the least Type?Doremon?is genuinely invested in your growth, and you are fortunate to have come across one.

Type Nobita

  1. Does not take ownership - has an external locus of control. Does not understand the circle of influence. The 3 layers of control, influence and concern is blurred for type Nobita. You can easily spot these folks - quick to play victim.
  2. Self Certified Critic - exceptionally diligent in spotting and stating problems and finding flaws. Ask them what would you do differently? See if your receive silence or solution.
  3. Gives feedback out of context - will blame you or others for something they could not do / achieve after weeks, months.. many moons ago ( Yeah I know you have no clue and are probably scratching your head). When they cite it you can almost see the glorious cape trailing behind them.
  4. Has centre of universe syndrome - Pick any topic under the sun space, weather, travel, book or anything, eventually its about them.
  5. Is quick to take credit for everything that goes well.
  6. Not good listeners - they usually respond to react. You can gauge by the questions they ask if at all they let you finish what you had to say.

Needless to say if Doremon meted out that pill, please pop it in. You are either way off the course or will be there soon. It’s time to ponder, self reflect and mend your ways. Or quite likely your Doreman has foreseen whats headed your way and wants you to be prepared.

Verdict: You need that dose!

But if your source was Nobita then let go, it will just leave a bitter taste and it's no good

Verdict: Simply toss that pill away.

PS: Coming soon on #RDWiSe are Nobitas a lost cause or there is hope?
