Welcome to issue 52 of the Curious AI Newsletter, curated by Oliver Rochford , Cyber futurist and former Gartner Research Director, and synthesized and summarized using AI.
CEO’s doth protest too much, methinks
Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, tried to dismiss fears this week about AI scaling hitting a wall. But of course he would, wouldn’t he? This comes amidst mounting reports of? Go-To market challenges tech firms are being confronted with. Amazon has allegedly delayed it’s Alexa AI reboot due to critical latency issues, and Microsoft already seems to be encountering Copilot fatigue as it continues to supersaturate its portfolio with “gimmicky” AI features.
Coming back to Huang and Nividia though, it is crucial to understand that their default position will be to stoke up the hype for as long as they can. It doesn’t take AGI-level intelligence to observe that there seems to be a direct correlation between the need for GPU’s to scale up models and the Nvidia stock price. If and when we hit a plateau, however permanent or temporary, GPU sales will also fall, and Nvidia’s stock is sure to follow.?
Of course, the game is not over yet. Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, just claimed that no evidence shows that process has been stunted, with Altman insisting that scaling laws are still applicable but limited by current compute. OpenAI is reportedly planning a $1 trillion training run.?
What this really tells you is that they simply don’t know. But it does seem to confirm recent rumors that the last few training runs have not yielded any big jump in capabilities. Altman and the other Scaling Cornucopians are not just hoping but actively gambling that scaling laws will continue if the training run can also be scaled sufficiently.?
AI Climate Snark
The Economist reports that AI is making climate models more accurate. Which is good, as with AI currently also becoming a major contributor to climate change, we will be able to better measure precisely how the climate system collapses around us.?
Another report that’s been making the rounds is about the alleged AI-led robot uprising. The story also includes a video that supposedly went viral. Buried somewhere in the reporting is the disclaimer, “The Hangzhou company admitted that the incident was part of a test conducted with the consent of the Shanghai showroom owner.” Obviously, the entire thing is contrived as a publicity stunt. It’s a terrible example of FUD ?and how gullible people actually are, despite the highest level of education in human history. Computer programs don’t have agency or feelings.
