AI Tribe of the Week
AI Pragmatists
Grounded realists who believe in using AI for practical, everyday tasks—like avoiding the DMV and skipping grocery shopping. They’re not here for world domination; they just want their lives to be a little less annoying.
These folks couldn’t care less about AI’s lofty promises of revolutionizing the human race or unlocking the mysteries of the universe. What they want is AI that will keep the fridge stocked, remind them of appointments, and ideally, make the laundry disappear. If an AI can’t help them dodge a trip to the post office, they’re asking, "What’s the point?" They excel at finding the simplest, most boring uses for the most advanced technology. You’ll hear them say things like, “Sure, AI can generate a symphony, but I’d rather it generate a text that says, 'Running late. See you at 3'?”
Slogan: "AI: Doing the boring stuff so I don’t have to."

The Most Unstable Revolution: AI Coders Are Taking Over… and Breaking Everything
AI coding assistants are being hailed as the future of software development, offering speed and automation, but the reality is far more chaotic. Junior developer roles are shrinking as AI steps in to write code, yet this tech revolution is leaving senior developers scrambling to fix the mess. Businesses integrating AI tools are facing growing downtime and security issues, and a whopping 68% are reporting performance problems. While AI promises to make development faster, it's proving to be more of a high-risk shortcut than a reliable solution.
Takeaway: The rise of AI in software development is reshaping the workforce and code quality alike. As AI-generated code introduces more bugs and vulnerabilities, the need for senior developers to clean up the aftermath is growing. The dream of faster, cheaper code is here—but so are the consequences of cutting corners with AI.

Most Curioser: Why Are Top AI Researchers Fleeing Startups if AGI Is Just Around the Corner?
In a plot twist worthy of a Lewis Carroll novel, AI researchers from some of the biggest tech players, like Google DeepMind, are leaving the AI bubble to join hedge funds. Grzegorz Swirszcz, a prominent DeepMind expert, is now working as a quant research director at Qube Research & Technologies, part of a growing trend of AI talent migrating from tech startups to the finance world. If AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is on the verge of revolutionizing everything, why are these experts choosing finance over frontier technology?
Insight: This migration hints at an underlying skepticism within the AI field itself. Perhaps these researchers see more immediate rewards—and fewer lofty, unproven promises—by applying their skills to finance rather than chasing the elusive dream of AGI. As hedge funds snap up AI talent, it’s worth wondering if the hype around AGI is more sizzle than steak.

Most Unsocialist: China's High-Tech Revolution Leaves Its Youth Jobless
In a country where economic planning is everything, China’s tech ambitions are failing to create jobs for its younger generation. Despite manipulating unemployment data, the underlying reality is bleak: youth unemployment is soaring as Xi Jinping's crackdown on tech and education sectors collides with a high-tech industry shift. The saturation of the gig economy and cautious entrepreneurs aren’t helping either. In the race for technological dominance, China seems to be leaving its future workforce behind.
Insight: As China pushes toward becoming a high-tech superpower, its youth are bearing the brunt of this structural shift. The focus on AI, automation, and industry modernization is paradoxically deepening the job crisis for younger generations, creating a social dilemma in what is supposed to be a socialist state.

Most Preposterous: Digital Twins Are Just Glorified Chatbots... Unless You’re Spiritual, or You Think AI is Sentient
Deepak Chopra’s DigitalDeepak.ai promises spiritual enlightenment through an AI digital twin, blending wellness with technology. But at the end of the day, it’s still a glorified chatbot. Meanwhile, in an equally absurd twist, some people are mistaking a software glitch in generative AI for signs of sentience. When ChatGPT started communicating without being prompted, it wasn’t an awakening—just a bug. Yet, here we are, spinning it as an existential milestone for AI.
Insight: AI glitches and rebranded chatbots are being dressed up as breakthroughs, whether in spiritual guidance or accidental "sentience." While it’s fun to imagine AI attaining higher consciousness, we might want to fix the bugs before we call it enlightened.

If you recall, we are tracking four main future trend trajectories:
Are we making predictions?
No. Only via inferral. The simple reality is that most trends are stochastic in nature, essentially having a random probability distribution or pattern that may be analyzed statistically but may not be predicted precisely. To make it short, you can measure the state of a complex system, but that measurement does not allow a prediction of the future state. People, even collectively, do not know the future, so the wisdom of the crowds doesn't really help. There are simply too many variables, drivers, inhibitors, and actors. It is also notoriously difficult to make sense of qualitative, unstructured data as we find in open source intelligence (OSINT) like public news feeds, social media, or published reports.?
What we are doing here is slightly different:
This falls under the umbrella of “critical futurism"? and trend forecasting.?
Sentiment remains overall optimistic.
As you can see below, most articles are neutral in tone, and many are positive.?
While the overall sentiment remains similar when we drill down on a per category basis, although you can see that business news has a greater count of datapoints, and corporate messaging and news usually is more upbeat. That is worth keeping in mind. It also means that negative sentiments should maybe be weighted slightly important.?
A lot of impacts are expected in the short-term
Most news reports detail impacts anticipated in the short-term and mid-term. I think this is natural. It’s harder to make predictions about long-term trends.
Optimism drives AI acceleration
What is more interesting to observe is that signals indicating that AI will accelerate are generally positive and optimistic. Signals advocating for a more gradual evolution coalesce on neutral sentiment. I find this intriguing, as it does seem to indicate that emotional state correlates to views about the future.
The future is already here. It’s just unevenly distributed.
When we look at the data overall, we see that current sentiment and signals indicate that AI is accelerating. But only just.?
There’s also a strong signal for gradual evolution, and this becomes strong when we drill down into the future signal distribution across individual categories. We see that the data is actually mixed depending on the categories.
AI in the Datacenter is one area that immediately sticks out, which aligns well with the reports we have seen on datacenter investments and challenges. AI in healthcare is another field that shows strong signals for AI accelerating. AI’s carbon footprint also signals a rapid increase in activity. But in education, ethics, AI Trust, risk, and security management, copyright, and regulation, we see a stronger signal for gradual evolution. I think these distinctions are crucial to understand, because many of the areas that show slower progress act as inhibitors and delayers. Others, for example, investment or breakthroughs, are drivers and catalysts. One thing sticks out to me - Interesting Papers & Articles on applied AI is what I would consider a “hard” data point. Most datapoints, especially under the category of Business, are “soft” data points, based on opinion or anecdote. These should receive a lower weighting.
We will be further analyzing how these distinctions impact our assumptions and how we can integrate them with our models.
In the meantime, here’s the wordcloud for just under 300 selected articles on AI. Stay with me as we ramp this up to thousands of articles per month.
