Curiosity Measures

Curiosity is a curious thing. When we are curious about another person, we have questions. We want to see beyond the words, facial expression and head nods. Curiosity can help us understand the what, the why and the WHO the person really is. Curiosity drives how much more of the story we really want to know. And, let’s be honest, sometimes we are very, VERY curious, and other times we are very, VERY not.?
What if you were asked to measure your level of curiosity on a ruler? What would the measurement be to the person who shares information you never wanted to know or disagree with? If you find yourself focusing on all the ways they are wrong, or all the ways you are right, you probably would have a measurement of less than one inch. There would be no question about who this person is and why they believe what they believe. There would be no learning. Your questions may be ones that only act as an escape hatch to get out of the situation. Or maybe there would be no questions at all.
But, what if you ran across that same person and decided to dial up the measurement, and learn more about why they believe what they believe? ?Or expressed a desire to learn more about the person and/or the topic? ?Your curiosity ruler would most likely measure above the 5 inch mark. The higher the mark, the deeper the connection and learning.
Think about those early times in an important relationship where you are simply captivated with their stories. You are eager to ask questions to learn more and more and more. You want to not only know about WHAT happened, but the impact on their heart and soul, and WHO they truly are. And, remember when they showed that about YOU? ?The messy, exciting, interesting, and not-so-interesting you. Remember THAT feeling? When their curiosity ruler measured at an 8, 9 or 10, you felt heard. And seen. And known.?

Curiosity can be an indicator of the level and depth of the relationship you have. Lack of curiosity can hinder a relationship from even beginning, or can keep it at a surface level. Curiosity leads to learning. Without a measurement of curiosity, our “knowing-ness” will continue to limit us.
Find yourself a ruler. Or draw one, or imagine one. Measure your curiosity around those you care about. Where is there an opportunity to move the line up a few inches??
In a world filled with knowers, be a learner. A learner of people and things all begin with curiosity. Let’s measure UP.?
