Curiosity + Creation = Innovation

Curiosity + Creation = Innovation

Whether you’re an individual, a leader, a team, or an organisation, the balance between curiosity and creation is what drives growth and impact. Some of us are natural dreamers but struggle to act. Others are brilliant at execution but rarely pause to explore. And some of us are observers, watching from the sidelines, hesitant to take the next step.

In rare cases, some people or teams manage to embody all four quadrants. They observe thoughtfully, dream boldly, execute effectively, and innovate seamlessly. These are the individuals, leaders, and organisations who adapt and thrive, no matter the challenge. However, even for these rare few, sustaining this balance often requires deliberate effort, reflection, and collaboration.

I like to divide this into four quadrants: Observer, Dreamer, Executer, and Inventor. The Inventor is the ultimate quadrant, where curiosity and creation come together at their highest levels. It’s a fine balance of both - having the right amount of curiosity to imagine and dream big, and the right amount of creation to explore, test, and make it happen.

The 4 personas

The more curiosity and creation you can bring together, the better. But it takes intention to cultivate both and balance them in a way that drives meaningful growth and impact.

The four personas

Observers

Observers see what’s already there

Observers are masters of noticing. They see patterns others miss, reflect deeply, and observe the world around them. But if they don’t act or explore new possibilities, they risk getting stuck in observation mode.

In a team, this might look like endless analysis without progress. For a leader, it could mean staying in their comfort zone instead of trying something bold. For an organisation, it’s the status quo - safe but stagnant.

Dreamers

Dreamers imagine what’s possible

Dreamers are the big-picture thinkers, brimming with ideas and possibilities. They love exploring what’s possible, but dreaming alone doesn’t build anything. Without action, even the best ideas remain just ideas.

Teams of Dreamers generate excitement but often leave details unfinished. Leaders with this mindset inspire others but may struggle with follow-through. Organisations rich in Dreamers might have visionary strategies but lack the execution to bring them to life.

Executers

Executers bring things to life

Executers are doers. They thrive on action, delivering results and achieving goals. Their strength is in making things happen - but without curiosity, they risk getting stuck in routine, missing opportunities for innovation or deeper meaning.

In teams, Executers hit every deadline but might resist change. Leaders with this mindset excel at delivering but may overlook the bigger picture. Organisations focused on execution are operationally excellent but may lack the agility to adapt.

Inventors

Inventors dream and do

Inventors live in the sweet spot where curiosity meets creation. They imagine bold possibilities and then take decisive action to bring them to life.

For individuals, this looks like creating a life of purpose and action. For teams, it’s blending discovery with the delivery of practical results. For organisations, it’s adapting to challenges while leading with vision.

It’s not necessary to embody all four personas as a singular individual. What matters is recognising your strengths and taking action to get support where needed.

If you’re great at dreaming but lack the ability to get things done, team up with an Executer. If you’re great at executing, partner with a Dreamer to inspire fresh ideas.

Where do you need to grow?

Now that you’ve explored the personas, take a moment to reflect on where you and your team or organisation stand today.

  • What are your strengths? Are you naturally curious, action-driven, or a mix of both?
  • Where are your weaknesses? Do you struggle to move from ideas to action, or does routine stop you from dreaming bigger?
  • What gaps need support? If you’re a Dreamer, who can help you execute? If you’re an Executer, where can you find inspiration?
  • Where do you need partnerships? Teams and organisations thrive when they balance exploration and execution. What kind of people, skills, or collaborations will help you reach the Inventor quadrant?

Growth starts with understanding where you are now and deciding what steps or partnerships you need to excel.

To be honest I usually hover in the middle of all and depending on situation and energy I will go out to either. If I MUST choose I can't so I pick two, Inventor and Observer :D
