Curating Inclusive Spaces: The Foundation for Your Workplace Culture

As someone with a neurodiverse brain, I've spent much of my life searching for a sense of belonging. Growing up, I often felt the need to "fit in" without understanding the deeper reasons behind that. Later, as an immigrant building my social networks from scratch, I became even more attuned to the importance of finding spaces where you can be heard, valued, and truly belong.
This deep-seated need to create inclusive spaces followed me into my work as a human rights lawyer. I was dedicated to empowering others and amplifying voices that often went unheard. I knew then, as I know now, that creating a space where people feel safe to share is not just about the work—it's about human connection.
I continue that mission through my Cultural (Inclusive) Corporate Events.
These workshops and events are not just about baking flatbread or sharing a meal but about using the universal language of food and cultural practices to create environments where every participant feels valued for their unique stories and lived experiences.
How I'm Doing It Differently
Each workshop is carefully curated to foster deep, meaningful connections. I weave together storytelling, cultural heritage, and sensory experiences to create a journey where participants engage in informal yet impactful conversations that transcend the surface level and move into more profound, more personal insights.
For instance, while we waited for the dough to rise (about 45 minutes), I led the group through an interactive session, sharing my own story as a neurodivergent, first-generation migrant woman. I invite participants (using creative fun prompts) to share their cultural practices, experiences, and personal stories. Using prompts and cards that address food, identity, and culture, I create an environment where no one feels like an outsider. In these moments, genuine human connection happens. It's not about who knows more about the "dominant culture"; it's about learning and growing together.
What sets my workshops apart is that they are not "cookie-cutter" events. Each session is tailored to the group, considering the dynamics, needs, and goals. Whether we're talking about the symbolism of Za'atar as a connection to home or tasting olive oil from a sustainable, female-founded farm in Greece, every element is chosen with care to spark conversation and create an inclusive, safe space.
Why It Matters for Your Workplace
Creating safe, inclusive workplace environments isn't just a "nice-to-have"—it's essential. When employees feel safe to be themselves, they bring their whole selves to the table, contributing more authentically and creatively. A culture of belonging fosters innovation, deepens engagement and enhances collaboration.
To make the experience even more memorable, each participant will receive a small gift bag that includes a carefully curated pouch of Za'atar, a bottle of premium extra virgin olive oil, a story card, and a small picture that captures the moments of joy and cultural connection. These items remind participants of the artistic journey and the connections made during the workshop, offering them a tangible keepsake to take home with them.
In my experience, we build the most connected, productive teams in these inclusive spaces—where everyone's story matters. As your organisation looks to foster a more engaged workplace, consider the power of cultural connection and mindful team bonding. Together, we can create a workplace where everyone feels they belong, are heard, and are valued for their unique perspectives.

PSS: I am organising my first EDI Networking Breakfast on 24th Oct in an inspiring central London location. It would be an intimate event with pioneers of EDI from different sectors, to connect, share challenges, ideas and discuss possibilities and solutions.?
