According to The Nation’s Health, a publication of the American Public Health Association, community health providers have long faced “funding declines, workforce shortages, and health inequities.” And that description was made BEFORE the US suffered more than one million deaths from COVID-19. As an article in the NY Times states, “more Americans have died of COVID-19 than in two decades of car crashes or on battlefields in all of the country’s wars combined… and the true number is almost certainly higher because of undercounting.”

The toll of COVID has been particularly hard on community health workers, who have been working tirelessly on the frontlines to care for those in their communities. According to a recent study published by the National Hazards Center, a survey of public health workers identified “burnout, fatigue, and feeling unappreciated were commonly discussed as ramifications of the high workload.” The same study pointed out that adaptive work environments have given workers “increased flexibility,” and that “the shift to remote work was received better when health departments had the ability to provide staff with the technology needed to work remotely.” Additionally, the study found that “the shift to remote work did not work well when there were appreciable gaps in the provision of technology needed to work remotely.” One quality improvement coordinator interviewed for the study lamented the lack of technological support that they faced: “There are potential security issues, there’s internet slowness, our systems are really pushed to the brink, so opening a file or saving a file can take excessively long.”3
