A Cup of Interesting Facts about Coffee on International Coffee Day 2020

As the world celebrates International Coffee Day 2020: here are some interesting cup of facts about coffee in Africa, facts from Ethiopia. According to historical records, coffee is originally from Ethiopia -- historians peg it to pre-15th-century Ethiopia.

According to the USDA, in 2018/19, Ethiopian exports were estimated to reach 3.98 million bags of coffee (238.8 metric ton), making it, once again, the most important African coffee exporter and the tenth largest exporter in the world. For the 2019/20 marketing year, experts say Ethiopian exports will reach around 3.9 million bags of coffee (234,000 metric tons).

This Ethiopian Kochere coffee (pictured above), hails from the town of Kochere, in the Yirgacheffe region, south western Ethiopia. Kochere is a district in the Yirgacheffe region and it produces almost 30% of the coffee there. The coffee from the Yirgacheffe region is widely known for its quality. The Ethiopia Kochere is grown at an altitude between 1800m and 2200m.

In the African country of Ethiopia, coffee is also part of the celebrations and heritage of the people.

The African country Ethiopia is called the birthplace of coffee. The forests in Ethiopia are so fertile that coffee trees grow from the ground on their own.

In the picture above is the Ethiopian Harrar coffee, a wild and exotic dry processed (natural) Arabica coffee that is grown on small farms in the Oromia region (formerly Harrar) in southern Ethiopia at elevations between 1,400 meters and 2,000 meters.

In Ethiopia, coffee consumption is an important daily ritual that takes place during the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony. Often, each cup is served with a heaping spoonful of sugar and a snack of fresh popcorn.
