Retired Teacher Takes UK Battle Rap Scene by Storm

One remarkable former schoolteacher from the UK is rewriting the narrative on age and gender stereotypes! At 66 years young, Joy shattered expectations by venturing into the dynamic world of battle rap, showcasing her talent and fearlessness on stage since 2018.

From her humble beginnings as a shy schoolteacher, Joy took a courageous leap into the unknown, discovering the exhilarating "magic" that lies beyond her comfort zone. Despite initial skepticism and curious glances, she fearlessly pursued her passion, forging genuine connections with fellow battle rappers and challenging preconceived notions every step of the way.

From the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to the stages of New York City, Joy’s unique voice has defied age and gender bias. Her inspiring story is captured in the award-winning documentary, Joy Uncensored.

“I'm finding magic by going into parts of the world that are not like [my] own….it just makes me feel alive,” said France.
