The Culture Shock

The Culture Shock

Yes, usually there is a culture shock that most face when starting to engage with the startup scene.

In addition to myself we at ArcticStartup have a few colleagues that came from the corporate companies. We all took a rather brave step, if I may say, jumping into this world of possibilities called the startup scene.

I went through the same cultural shock that most enterprises face when starting to engage with the scene. These are both small things as such as doing the renovation of the new office ourselves or bigger things like there are no supervisors. Personally the first thing I was kindly asked to do was to swop my high heels to slippers in the office (really, you must be joking?). Secondly I noticed that I (an early bird ) often drank both my first and the second cup of coffee on my own in the office in mornings. Soon I learned how most of my colleagues just have the opposite rhythm and are more effective and creative in the late afternoon then mornings like me. With this and the shortage of set processes and working models we are very open to constant flow of opportunities, literally almost 24/7.

During these first 2 months I have now met dozens of corporates wanting to engage with startups for various reasons. The main goals are usually around cultural, social and financial growth. However I find it very valuable learning that all the more specific needs beneath these are as individual as the companies themselves.

After the holidays we are holding events where the corporates get the opportunity to engage with the relevant players of the startup scene according to their own goals and needs. Some are in it for the first time, other′s are building on-top of what they already have done. You can find a list of some of the interesting corporate activities from this article written by our CEO Dmitri Sarle last year.

Is your company looking for ways of engaging with startups? If so, feel free to contact us. Let′s see together if we′d be able to help. As we do speak both Corporate and Startup I trust that at the least we can help you not to get lost in translation.

PS. I have my own red slippers nowadays.

Happy Summer!

Welcome to the startup world, Suski! I haven't worn high heels in almost 8 months either. And yes, there's nobody at the office before 9.30, let alone before 8. Then again, most of us are on Slack at midnight... It sure is a different world!
