A Culture of Gratitude
If, a poem by Rudyard Kipling, champions the indomitable spirit, the person who perseveres when all is lost, who obtains victory amidst the fangs of failure. We all aspire to be such a person, reciting ad nauseam verses from the poem to the point of commitment:
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
???But make allowance for their doubting too;??
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
???Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
???And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
Yet the words we so easily commit to prove far more difficult to commit in action when the situation necessitates that very commitment. As the saying goes, easier said than done.
But it is precisely in doing that we become our most transcendent selves.
When we pivoted the ethos of Output Medical towards the opioid epidemic, we were not sure how our engineering partners would accept such a move. It was unprecedented. There was a great deal of uncertainty, to say the least.
Rather than mire in the haze of inaction, succumb to the uncertainty of not knowing, we decided to act. We called directly our engineering partners and discussed the pivot.

Sure enough, they believed in our vision, the importance of our mission and the need for the pivot.
They believed in us because we believed in action. We took the initiative to reach out, to explain directly what Output Medical could do for the opioid epidemic.
We acted, rather than idle upon the myriad of possibilities, the endless array of half-formed thoughts. For knowledge without action is an empty science.
And science alone is nothing without action – an empty calling – that needs action to make whole.
In acting, a curious residual effect occurs; we become grateful, as though action is inevitably accompanied with something more subtle, more innate in order to be effective.
It is accompanied with gratitude.
Gratitude imbues action with purpose, imbues science with meaning.
Over time it enhances individual actions, resonates within every member of Output Medical, and in aggregate comes to define the company –
Creating a culture of gratitude.
The Output Medical way.
