"Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast"

A senior physician executive with a large Blues plan reminded me recently of management guru Peter Drucker’s above quote. We were, as is often the case in my conversations with industry leaders, discussing the importance of culture and to a certain extent, how to drive innovation, sometimes in spite of an organization’s culture. 

Based on similar conversations with scores of payer, provider, and healthcare technology leaders, there is an urgent need for many in our industry to cultivate cultures that are more nimble, less risk-averse, and more conducive to transformational change (e.g., embracing Value Based Care, Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence, Population Health, Telehealth, Remote Patient Monitoring, Data & Analytics, etc.).

To this end, I highly recommend the recently published Courageous Cultures  (Hurt, Karin; Dye, David. HarperCollins Leadership, 2020).  It’s a well-written & detailed analysis of behaviors & attributes that sabotage corporate cultures. More importantly, it offers a practical roadmap for leaders to begin transforming their organizations into ones that welcome innovative ideas and disruptive leaders while instilling a mindset that challenges the status quo and embraces an ongoing quest for identifying areas for improvement.

Obviously, we also now have the added challenge of navigating cultural transformation in a post-pandemic world. Here are some potentially helpful insights on that front: Your Employees Are Returning! Time for a Culture Change.
