Culture of Discipline - Key Core Value for Great Companies

Starting with an enlightening Quote for those who aspire to become great individuals / Leaders — “Good is the enemy of Great” — (Courtesy — Jim Collins)

The quote is applicable for everything we do in our lives, in our personal and professional endeavors we get to hear accolades “You have done a Good Job” Vs “You have done a great job (Beyond Expectations)”, the later definitely raises the bar of work done and gives self-fulfillment and sense of achievement and thereafter no looking back.

Majority of the working professionals they feel “I have been working for 8–10 hrs and they have done justice to work”, the only question is “Are we doing our best”, “ Are we doing the work in best possible way in least time?” A lot of people settle for Good, because its easier, they don’t try for being the best.

Why ?

The answer is surprisingly Simple, Pragmatic and Straightforward.

If you want to go from good to great, you need to be Disciplined. For the company to go from good to a Great company, you need to have Disciplined people, Disciplined Thought and Disciplined Action.

As the book deciphers, Every organization have a Culture and also have discipline of certain degree, whereas Organization for being great needs the “Culture of Discipline” at the core value, the diagram above denotes it well "Culture of discipline", the journey of Good to Great company Ground up and Breakthrough.

I would like to share few excerpts of the book from Jim Collins - Good to Great and the 5 key take a way's are as follows

  3. HedgeHog Concept — The Hedgehog Concept is to identify company’s core value proposition (What can they do best), your hedgehog drives every decision. It challenges your “yes” and affirms your “no.” Focusing on the thing that a company does well is the best method of achieving the objectives of that activity, competency, and efficiency.
  4. The Flywheel — Flywheel concept is to address companies that can compare their business strategy with a massive flywheel. A company can have a great goal, but the only way to reach that goal is by creating and making sure of achieving small objectives. These small objectives / initiatives are called Build Up’s and than a long term sustainable Breakthrough is achieved
  5. Technology Accelerators — Keeping upto date with technology is particularly important. Technology can solve some problems, whereas not all the problems, the competitive edge would always be Organisational goal (What can they be best at) Technology approach cycle is

Everyone has a leader within them and would like to share a brilliant quote for everyone

The good to great leaders never wanted to become larger than life heroes, They never aspired to be put on a pedestal to become unreachable icons. They were seemingly ORDINARY PEOPLE quietly producing EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS
