European defence to stand on our own feet?

Is the European Defence Union realistic? How could cooperation make the European Union stronger in the world order? ?

In a recent episode of the Liberal?Europe podcast, we interviewed Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Chair of the Defence Committee of the German Bundestag, Deputy Leader of the German Free Democratic Party (FDP) and Member of the Bundestag for North Rhine-Westphalia. Strack-Zimmermann?emphasised the necessity for greater cooperation within the EU to ensure peace and security not only for current generations but also for the future of children and grandchildren. Strack-Zimmermann highlighted the pressing need for a unified defence strategy in light of Russia’s brutal?attack on Ukraine, which she described as a threat to all of Europe. She stressed the importance of reorganising defence and security efforts to be more collective and efficient, noting that while individual nations have significant defence budgets, pooling resources and efforts would yield better protection for the entire EU.?

Strack-Zimmermann also discussed the potential for establishing a European Commissioner for Security and Defence alongside the creation of a dedicated European Defence committee at the European Parliament. She underscored the importance of mutual trust and collaboration among EU member states to counter threats from adversaries such as Russia, Iran, and China. Furthermore, she pointed out the necessity of a qualified majority for decisions in foreign affairs, defence, and security to enable swift and effective responses to crises. Strack-Zimmermann warned that failure to act decisively could lead to greater instability and internal challenges within Europe, further empowering extremist political movements.?
