Culture and Cognition Series - For the learning era

In my role within Geographic Learning and Development at my workplace, combined with my expat life in Europe, I've navigated the challenges of parenting within the contrasting realms of Indian schooling expectations and the teaching methodologies prevalent in European schools. Instead of concluding 2022 with a traditional list of resolutions, I'm commencing a new venture: the series.

The central goal of this series is to delve into the intricacies of culture and history within each country, and how these elements have influenced their approaches to learning and cognitive development within society. This influence could stem from historical rulers, significant wars, renowned leaders, religious beliefs, climatic conditions, and the natural environment – a multitude of factors that shape the societal cognitive patterns.

These explorations will be channeled through the lens of:

- Preferred modes of learning: Is it more independent, group-based, competitive, or collaborative?

- Learning outcomes: Are individuals seeking authentic certificates, experiential learning, assessment results, or a pathway to advancing their careers?

- Labor regulations for training and teaching policies: Should employers be responsible for learning facilities, or should employees actively seek and utilize learning opportunities?

My inquisitive mind is drawn to numerous topics. With the commencement of the series, I aim to foster interaction, learning, and the exchange of valuable insights within my LinkedIn network. We will delve into history, societal values, and learning principles that arise from cultural backgrounds. The fusion of cultural identity and heritage shapes how we perceive and comprehend the world, deeply impacting our cognitive processes from an early age.

Our collective mission is to contribute towards a through shared learning, united efforts, and collaborative strides toward the . To achieve this, it is crucial to dissect the nuanced cognitive styles cultivated by diverse cultures.

- Reflect on an unforgettable historic moment that has significantly shaped your society.

- Elaborate on the value system that has emerged from the cultural influences.

Thank you Narmadha for these insights! Experiencing multiple cultures and living in different countries can certainly have an impact on a person’s learning style, for me, it’s mainly Faith and a combination of different cultures that had a significant influence on my education, development and learning style. I have chosen an adaptive contextualized approach! Following are few ways I have noticed : -?Teaching methods, different education and teaching approaches a person can learn -?Learning to adapt, living in different countries develop adaptability & flexibility which are valuable skills -?Developing global perspective of each culture, and enhance the ability to think critically to learn new subjects -?Learning to apply, and ability to understand how science and learning could be used in real life -?Learning languages, and being able to communicate efficiently, which have a significant impact on opening up new learning opportunities. Overall, #culture and #environment can have a significant #influence on person’s #development and #learning, and it’s important for #organizations and each one of us to be aware of theses influences and how they can positively #impact us.
