When I introduce The Davidic Growth Paradigm to companies and organizations, I start by saying that their transformative digitalization [1] journey begins by looking at six potential growth areas [2]. These are Governance, Processes, Resources, Innovation, Technology, and Culture.
In the paradigm, Culture is defined as follows:
Culture – or organizational culture, is a set of shared assumptions that influence how individuals interact in an organization. It may also be something that develops over time, as individuals in an organization adapt to each other and relate with one another in the context of attaining shared business objectives.
I also emphasize that personally, I regard Culture as the most important of the six growth areas. A business or organization wishing to embark on a successful transformative digitalization journey should learn to develop a culture of growth from within their ranks. Otherwise, any gains achieved from the other growth areas will be difficult to sustain.
One of the books I have read that I find insightful when it comes to a discussion of group culture is the book The Culture Code.
The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups is a book written by Daniel Coyle that delves into the world of highly successful groups and the underlying dynamics that make them so successful. The book is written in a conversational style that is both engaging and informative, making it easy to read and understand.
The author starts by explaining how to demystify the concept of group culture which he defines as the unique set of behaviors, beliefs, and values that define a group. We all know that strong group culture works for organizations, communities, even families. But what we can't figure out is how it works. Daniel Coyle posits that it is perhaps because we think of culture like a trait, as in DNA. This makes us presuppose that it is something fixed or even somehow predestined. Coyle takes a different approach by researching eight of the world's most successful groups and found out that culture is created by evolving a set of skills within the organization.
He then goes on to explain how these cultural set of skills come together to create a powerful and effective culture. The author highlights the key elements of successful cultures, including trust, vulnerability, and purpose, and provides real-life examples of groups that have these elements in spades. The best part of the output of his research is that he gives concrete suggestions on how these skill can be developed in a group, and thus foster group culture that will make them successful.?
It can be taught. It can be learned.
One of the most interesting aspects of the book is the author's exploration of the "tribe" mentality that exists within many highly successful groups. He argues that humans are inherently social creatures and that we thrive when we feel like we are part of a group. He explains how this tribe mentality can be harnessed to create a culture that is both supportive and productive.
The author also delves into the importance of leadership within a group, and how leaders can set the tone and direction for the group as a whole. He provides practical tips and strategies for leaders to create a culture that inspires and motivates their team, and encourages them to take risks and innovate.
