Cultural Shifts with Global Mobility

Cultural Shifts with Global Mobility

Last week I was fortunate enough to sit down with friend and colleague Trisha Carter from Trans Cultural Careers .

As a registered Psychologist with a Masters degree majoring in organisational psychology, Trisha's work focusses on cross-cultural psychology. Having worked in HR and in the global mobility industry and lived and worked in New Zealand, China and now Australia she understands the challenges organisations face as they move their employees globally.

Our discussion includes:

  • Personal stories of adapting to new cultures, the importance of accepting and understanding local ways, and strategies to help expats thrive.
  • The evolution of the global mobility industry, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the shift towards prioritising the emotional as well as practical needs of relocating employees.
  • The critical role of empathy and professionalism in resettlement work and how these values help new arrivals to settle effectively.

Bridget, I just listened to the podcast last week and loved it. I turned off the car stereo with two thoughts: firstly I wish I had known about the friendship cup years ago and I will use it now all the time in so many contexts and conversations. Thank you for sharing that. It hit me right in the heart. Secondly, I wish everyone in global mobility was a bit more 'Bridget' in their approach! Grateful for all you and your team do and the 'professional friendship' you bring to it. I've experienced that approach only once but it changed everything. Thank you - loved this conversation!

As someone who once sat in a desk next to Bridget at MFAT, it’s such a pleasure to be able to follow the development of her thriving business on LinkedIn. Congratulations for everything you’re achieving Bridget.

Bridget, it was great to hear your stories of growing cultural intelligence through your diplomatic life. It was also great to hear how your care for assignees and your skill in setting up a values driven business has been a part of the changing nature of #GlobalMobility support. I loved hearing the economist in you say 'people aren't just labour units to be plunked down here, there and everywhere, they're actually people' and to discuss the needs that people have in their global relocations. Ngā mihi. Thank you for your work.

Anyone working at the Apec Secretariat deserves a trophy on cross-cultural management. It was unique & diverse. ?m so glad we were together in our posting assignment & got to work together. I have fone memories of our assignment. Best trip taken with you driving from Rotarua to Wellington via Lake Taupo & the desert road.
