A few years ago, I was working with a client—let’s call her Jan—who was struggling in her career. Despite being a senior leader in tech, she hesitated to harness her voice in meetings and even to advocate for herself in securing higher-level career opportunities. Initially, Jan believed she needed support with her confidence. However, as we delved deeper, it became clear that the root of the issue was her low self-worth.
Jan's story is not uncommon. How many times have we refrained from speaking up in meetings, doubting our worth even when we have the expertise? Jan's journey to rediscover her self-worth was about recognizing her intrinsic value, not just her professional achievements. When we embrace our intrinsic value, we set ourselves free from the constraints of external validation and open up a world of possibilities.
In this edition of Driven to Thrive, I will walk you through a journey of understanding and nurturing self-worth. Additionally, I will share real-life examples - highlighting how others have successfully transformed their self-worth and built a foundation for lasting confidence. Whether you are navigating personal challenges or looking to elevate your professional presence, these insights and tactics will help you thrive.
Self-Worth vs. Self-Confidence
Let's take a moment to understand the difference between self-worth and self-confidence. Think of self-confidence as the visible surface of a lake, calm or rippling based on the weather conditions. It fluctuates based on external feedback, experiences, and achievements. For instance, you might feel confident after acing a presentation or receiving positive feedback at work. It's that feeling of "I can do this."
On the other hand, self-worth is the profound, unchanging sense of value that lies deep within—the bedrock beneath the lake's surface. It’s about recognizing and appreciating your intrinsic value, independent of your achievements and the approval of others. It's that inner voice reminding you, "I am enough, simply because I am." While confidence can ebb and flow, self-worth provides a solid foundation that supports you through all of life's ups and downs.
By distinguishing between these two concepts, we can better understand how to nurture a stronger, more resilient sense of self.

Real-Life Stories that Inspire - The Power of Developing Self-Worth
Sarah’s Journey
Sarah, a marketing executive, always seemed confident on the surface. She led successful campaigns, received accolades from colleagues, and continuously delivered results that exceeded expectations. However, despite her outward success, Sarah battled an inner dialogue that belittled her efforts and achievements. She often felt like an imposter, attributing her successes to luck rather than her skills and hard work.
It wasn't until Sarah faced a significant professional setback—a campaign that didn't perform as anticipated—that she realized the extent to which her self-worth was tied to her achievements. The failure hit her hard, and she began questioning her abilities and value. Sarah decided to seek guidance, and through coaching, she discovered the foundational issue was her low self-worth.
With time and consistent effort, Sarah started practicing self-compassion and reframed her internal dialogue. She learned to separate her worth from her work outcomes, understanding that her value was inherent, not contingent upon her successes or failures. Today, Sarah approaches her work with renewed vigor, confident in her abilities yet firmly grounded in her self-worth. Her journey serves as a poignant reminder that nurturing self-worth is an ongoing process, but one that is immensely rewarding.
David’s Transformation
David, a software developer, epitomized an individual trapped in a cycle of self-doubt. Despite his technical prowess and a series of successful projects, David constantly second-guessed his value. He often found himself attributing his achievements to external factors or sheer luck rather than his skills and dedication. This negative self-talk not only impacted his performance but also his relationships and overall well-being.
The turning point came when David's company underwent a restructuring phase, and he was offered a leadership role. Initially overwhelmed by imposter syndrome, he considered declining the offer. However, with encouragement from a mentor, he decided to embrace the challenge. Through mentorship and introspective work, David embarked on a journey to recognize and affirm his self-worth.
He started by acknowledging his accomplishments and reframing his internal dialogue. Engaging in regular mindfulness and seeking continuous feedback, David gradually transformed his perspective. He learned to celebrate his strengths and view setbacks as learning opportunities rather than reflections of his inadequacy. Over time, David's renewed sense of self-worth not only enhanced his professional performance but also led to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Emma’s Redefinition
Emma was a high-performing corporate lawyer who had always tied her self-worth to her career achievements. Recognized for her dedication and expertise, she rapidly climbed the ranks within her firm. However, the relentless pursuit of excellence led to immense stress and burnout. Despite her professional success, Emma felt a growing void and a disconnect between her personal satisfaction and her career accomplishments.
The turning point ocurred when Emma took a sabbatical, stepping back from her demanding legal career to focus on personal growth. During this period, she explored mindfulness practices, engaged in volunteer work, and reconnecting with hobbies she had long neglected. Through these activities, Emma discovered a new sense of self that was not solely defined by her professional identity. She realized that self-worth could stem from a balanced life that includes personal interests, meaningful relationships, and community contributions.
Reflecting on her journey, Emma returned to her career with a renewed perspective. She advocated for work-life balance within her organization and mentored colleagues on the importance of self-care and holistic growth. This redefinition of self-worth not only improved her well-being but also positively impacted her professional environment, fostering a more supportive and balanced workplace culture. Emma's story illustrates that integrating personal fulfilment with professional dedication can lead to a more enriched and sustainable sense of self-worth.
Practical Steps for Enhancing Self-Worth
Building upon the journeys of Sarah, David, and Emma, we can extract several practical steps to enhance self-worth:
The stories of Sarah, David, and Emma collectively underscore an essential truth: self-worth is not a static attribute, but a dynamic process of introspection, growth, and resilience. Their journeys reveal that acknowledging one's value requires continuous effort, a supportive environment, and a willingness to embrace both triumphs and setbacks. By practicing self-compassion, celebrating accomplishments, seeking guidance, and maintaining a balanced life, anyone can nurture a deep-seated sense of self-worth. As we incorporate these principles into our daily routine, we not only enhance our own lives but also contribute to a more empathetic and supportive community.
As the writer and poet, Rupi Kaur, beautifully expressed: “How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.” This quote serves as a powerful reminder that the way we perceive and treat ourselves sets the foundation for how we navigate the world and our relationships within it.
I eagerly encourage you to do something everyday to cultivate your self-worth!
