Cultivating Health & Wellness: Essential Strategies for High-Performing Women Leaders

Greetings to all trailblazing women at the helm!

We hear “self-care” bandied about often, but do you heed the notion that it is essential and not optional? Let’s talk about that.

As you navigate the demanding domains of leadership, it’s crucial to prioritize your health and wellness to sustain your performance and overall well-being. If you don’t, who will? That’s simple common sense. But it’s not always easy to accomplish.

We dedicate this newsletter to exploring effective strategies supporting physical and mental health, fostering work-life harmony, and encouraging a shift toward holistic well-being.

The Necessity of Work-Life Harmony

Achieving work-life harmony is more than a luxury; it’s necessary for sustained success and health. Unlike the elusive ‘balance,’ harmony involves creating a synergy between work and personal life, recognizing that priorities will shift depending on life’s demands.

According to the American Psychological Association, stress from striving for work-life balance can lead to serious health issues, making it essential for leaders to find a harmonious approach to manage both spheres effectively.

Integrating Physical and Mental Health Strategies

Incorporating three things into your daily habits can improve your weekly assessment of how you feel, the decisions you made, and the response from loved ones.

1.?Regular Physical Activity This is not new news, but it bears repeating. Engaging in regular physical activity is crucial. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week.

Exercise boosts physical health, enhances cognitive function, and reduces stress, a common hurdle for leaders.

2.?Mindfulness and Meditation Implementing mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga, or simple breathing exercises can significantly reduce stress levels and improve mental clarity. Who doesn’t want less stress and more clarity?

As Jon Kabat-Zinn famously said, “Mindfulness means being awake. It means knowing what you are doing.

3. Adequate Rest and Sleep Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Harvard Medical School reports that inadequate sleep can impair critical decision-making skills and creativity, which are vital for leadership roles. Are you clocking 7-8 hours?

Mindset Shifts for Well-Being

Emphasizing the importance of a positive mindset towards health and wellness can transform how leaders approach their daily routines. Viewing self-care as a non-negotiable aspect of your leadership role can lead to more sustainable health practices.

?As Maya Angelou beautifully put it, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

?

Practical Applications

Taking care of ourselves first ensures we can handle whatever life serves up, whether at home or work. And being a role model for those around us teaches others how to treat us and sets an example for how they can expect to be treated.

As leaders, we can encourage the adoption of corporate wellness programs that include health screenings, mental health days, and wellness workshops. These initiatives enhance individual well-being, contribute to a healthier, more productive work environment, and create a corporate culture that retains top talent.

For high-performing women leaders, investing in health and wellness is a strategic decision that impacts every facet of life and leadership. By integrating these health strategies into your routine, you can enhance your effectiveness and lead by example, showing your teams that leadership involves taking care of oneself to take care of others.

When you are well, everyone around you benefits.

Let’s start a conversation around this topic. I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Here are a few prompts:

??What does wellness in the workplace look like to you?

??How do you ensure your cup is full so that you can give to others from the overflow?

??How do you find harmony among your leadership role and all the other roles you play?

This is such a great topic, María Tomás-Keegan because we can all learn from one another. I find, what I be and do to cultivate wholeness changes depending on the time of the year and the waves of my business. I admit, I'm still learning how to breathe into the "slower" times and use them for the gift they are. I'm doing much better with that, using that time to play and explore, catch up socially and take naps!
