Cultivating a Culture of Appreciation Beyond Limitations

Cultivating a Culture of Appreciation Beyond Limitations

"Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary." – Margaret Cousins

From the desk of Karen Chaston.

?As I was contemplating the theme for this week’s newsletter, I originally thought “Love in the Workplace” is a theme that needs to be explored. Though whilst my intention behind using the word "love" in the workplace, was to express:

  • enthusiasm,
  • commitment, or
  • strong positive feelings towards one's work, colleagues, or company culture

The more I delved into my research, the more I realised that many may misinterpret the heading to mean, romantic relationships (wanted or unwanted) between colleagues within a professional setting.

So, for clarity of intent, Lesley and I decided that Appreciation was a more appropriate word.

As, appreciation; effectively communicates respect and admiration without crossing into personal territory, making it a preferred choice for fostering a respectful and professional workplace culture.

Enjoy this newsletter.

The main intention for wanting to utilise the word “Love”

Have you heard of the Scale of Consciousness developed by psychiatrist Dr. David R. Hawkins?

This scale is detailed in his book "Power vs. Force" and uses a logarithmic scale from 0 to 1000.

You can clearly see that:

  • Emotions like shame and guilt are at the lowest end of the scale.
  • Courage and neutrality are seen as pivotal points, vibrating at frequencies just above 200, where positivity begins to outweigh negativity.
  • Love vibrates at a frequency of 500 on this scale, characterised by a state of unconditional love, forgiveness and well-being.
  • Enlightenment, the highest state, vibrates from 700 and above.

Whilst Hawkins' work primarily focuses on broader emotional categories rather than specific feelings like appreciation, given the nature of the emotion, appreciation is closely aligned with positive states such as gratitude, love and joy. These emotions are associated with higher vibrational frequencies on Hawkins' scale.

Appreciation aligns with our intention of introducing and integrating high-vibration emotional practices into the workplace.

As this awareness can transform an organisation, leading to a multitude of benefits ranging from improved employee well-being and engagement, to enhanced productivity and organisational resilience.

Benefits from Introducing Appreciation into the Workplace

Introducing concepts related to higher emotional vibrations, such as appreciation, positivity and emotional intelligence, into the workplace can yield numerous benefits.

These benefits can enhance not only the individual well-being of employees but also the overall productivity and culture of the organisation.

Here are some key advantages:

1. Improved Employee Well-being

  • Focusing on positive emotions and appreciation can significantly enhance employees' mental and emotional well-being. A workplace that values and actively promotes emotional health can lead to reduced stress levels and lower rates of burnout.

2. Enhanced Team Collaboration

  • A positive emotional climate encourages a sense of unity and collaboration among team members. Appreciation and positive acknowledgment foster an environment where individuals are more willing to share ideas, support each other and work together effectively.

3. Increased Employee Engagement

  • When employees feel valued and appreciated, their engagement and commitment to their work and the organisation increase. This heightened engagement can lead to higher levels of job satisfaction and loyalty.

4. Boosted Productivity and Creativity

  • Positive emotions are linked to better performance, greater creativity and the ability to solve problems more effectively (Reason vibrates at 400). Employees who operate in a positive emotional state are more likely to be innovative and productive.

5. Attracting and Retaining Talent

  • Organisations known for their positive culture and emotional intelligence are more attractive to prospective employees. Furthermore, such environments are conducive to retaining top talent, as employees are more likely to stay with an organisation that values their well-being and contributions.

6. Enhanced Communication

  • Emotional intelligence training helps improve communication skills, leading to clearer and more effective interactions among employees. This can reduce misunderstandings and conflicts, creating a more harmonious workplace.

7. Leadership Development

  • Leaders who understand and embody high-vibration qualities such as empathy, appreciation and positivity are better equipped to inspire and motivate their teams. This type of leadership fosters a strong organisational culture and drives success.

8. Resilience to Change and Adversity

  • A positive, high-vibration workplace environment helps build resilience among employees. Teams become more adaptable to change and better equipped to handle challenges and uncertainties.

9. Positive Organisational Reputation

  • Companies that prioritise emotional well-being and cultivate a positive workplace culture enjoy a good reputation in their industry and community. This reputation can enhance customer loyalty and attract business partners.

10. Reduction in Workplace Conflicts

  • By fostering understanding and empathy, a workplace that values emotional intelligence and positive emotional states can significantly reduce interpersonal conflicts. This leads to a more peaceful and productive work environment.

Introducing appreciation into the workplace

Now that we have explained how Appreciation in the Workplace can significantly enhance morale, productivity and overall job satisfaction, let's look at three practical actions that individuals at any level of an organisation can start doing now to foster a culture of appreciation:

1. Give Specific Compliments

Begin by recognising and vocalising the specific contributions of your colleagues. Instead of general praise, highlight specific actions or qualities you appreciate. For example, "I really appreciated how you handled that client's issue with patience and professionalism."

The Impact: Specific compliments show that you are paying attention and value the unique contributions of each team member. This can boost confidence and encourage more of the same positive behaviour.

2. Write Appreciation Notes

Take a leaf out of Princess Diana book. Every evening before going to bed, she would sit down and write a thank you note to all the people she had met during the day. To show your appreciation take a few minutes to write personalised thank-you note or emails to colleagues who have helped you, contributed to the team, or gone above and beyond their duties, throughout the day.

The Impact: A written note can be a powerful token of appreciation that the recipient can keep and refer back to, serving as a tangible reminder of their valued contributions.

3. Create Opportunities for Public Recognition

Advocate for or establish regular team meetings or platforms where team members can recognise each other's achievements publicly. This could be a dedicated time during meetings, a bulletin board, or a digital space where employees can post kudos.

The Impact: Public recognition not only amplifies the positive effects of appreciation but also encourages a culture where such acknowledgments are the norm, reinforcing that every team member is valued, appreciated and respected.

Start with these three actions as they can assist to embed appreciation into the fabric of workplace interactions, leading to a more positive, supportive and motivated work environment.
