Ajay messaged me in LinkedIn, " Sir, I need some advice. Can you guide?"
"Sure, let's fix some time. We can discuss", I replied back.
Ajay called me on a set date and time and conversation followed:
This conversation opened up a very genuine but serious question in mind. And I thought why not share here so that anyone reading can ponder over it and take right decision.
"Sir, I am in 2nd year of Engineering. But I don't like engineering study and hence not doing well at results. I am worried about future. I am thinking of doing MBA. Can you please guide?"
I asked him, "Before I guide, can you please tell me why you joined engineering if you don't like? "
"I was afraid that my parents will get hurt if I don't listen to their words and fulfill their wish", Ajay sounded somber.
"Okay. Do you think lack of courage at that moment of time produced any good results? If you have taken little courage to hurt your parents that time, you wouldn't have hurt yourself now and in the process your parents too, leave aside career path ahead."
"Right", Ajay agreed.
" Already your parents invested money. You have invested 2 years time. My suggestion will be give full focus and complete your engineering. Now coming to MBA. Why do you want to do MBA? Have you asked yourself?"
"I like Hotel Management, but couldn't gather courage to tell my parent and choose the path", Ajay said.
"MBA and Hotel Management are different. But why do you think you like Hotel Management?", I asked back.
" I have seen my mother cooking from from childhood and I have helped her always in cooking. In the process I have learnt preparing lot of dishes and started loving cooking. I love that stuff", Ajay described.
I exclaimed, " GREAT! THIS IS YOUR LOVE/PASSION. If so, do you think you have to go for MBA, the decision is still 2 years away? Do you think if you become famous and wealthy like Sanjeev Kapoor just by following your passion and doing cooking profession, your parents will still feel bad?"
"No", Ajay agreed.
" So question is not engineering or cooking. It's about wealth, monetary security and being rich and famous. This changes all equation. THE WORLD has changed and changing fast. Lot of new opportunities are opening up beyond traditional means. Few suggestion if you take - complete Engineering as your parent's money invested and your 2 years time invested. This can give you job too and monetary security while you complete.
Meantime, start building your passion. Search it more, nourish it more - think of Sanjeev Kapoor, study him. Start writing blogs, make videos of your cooking. Plan to start a small outlet where you can server others with your cooking talents "
"Don't think of MBA. I don't think that is what you are looking for. That will be another trap to come out of old trap. You have 2 years time. Look within, try to understand yourself more and take guidance from within. Hear your little voice of consciousness. It's always feeble so we don't hear that. And try above few points - blogging, making video, side cooking etc. Life will show you path. You alone have to tread your own path and complete the journey", I ended.
"The discussion helped to get new thought process and direction, Sir. Thank you", Ajay sounded happy as if cloud was over.
"One day, I would love to taste your dishes", I laughed and asked. "Sure Sir", Ajay giggled too.
"Keep in touch, keep taking as the path of searching self will not be linear, it will be full of high points and low points.", I suggested.
"Sure Sir. Thank you", Ajay said.
We ended the discussion promising to be in touch.
Key Take Away:
- Cultivating the skill to listen the inner voice of consciousness within, our guiding compass.
- Sometime it's better to gather courage and stand for what we think right, though it hurt near and dear ones temporarily (off course intention is right).
- Temporary hurting is better than permanent injury.

6 年I think, @Jaydeep das, you did excellent counseling to find true passion and start working about that. I loved your advice to start sharing posts/videos...!! It’s a helpful article, thank you for sharing ..!!
Innovating conversations, one thought at a time.
6 年Unfortunately I have to disagree with your advice given ---? "Few suggestion if you take - complete Engineering as your parent's money invested and your 2 years time invested. This can give you job too and monetary security while you complete."? Many who follow this route are wasting own time/ money and that of their family. If there is no interest in engineering the potential greater of no talent for engineering existing. It was not because of Engineering interest the individual followed this study but rather more in most cases having high mathematical ability. Most of these individuals when assessed with psychometrics we discover having limited natural engineering ability only average and most below average.? Even if they are to complete studies the potential to support themselves is very low or none at all to find a good job? With reference to the MBA.. It should not even be on a students mind until after completing a few years in their specialisation understanding if it is needed and if they enjoy the field they work in. This drive for MBA's is distorted stupid idea driven by business thinking it means intelligence and greater potential for success and is supported by unscrupulous universities just intent on selling

6 年This is so true. Be congruent and stand up for what you believe in. Temporary hurt is better than permanent injury. Say what you feel. ??
