A Culinary Adventure in Giessen: My Experience with Gie?en-kocht!

Cooking has always been more than just preparing a meal—it’s a way of connecting with people, sharing stories, and celebrating cultures.

Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing this magic firsthand by participating in Gie?en-kocht, a unique community cooking event in Giessen, Germany.

This event proved to be much more than a culinary gathering; it was a celebration of diversity, creativity, and togetherness.

What is Gie?en-kocht?

Gie?en-kocht is not your average cooking event. It’s a creative concept that combines cooking, cultural exchange, and social networking.

Participants sign up individually or in pairs and are randomly paired with a cooking partner. Together, each pair is assigned to prepare one course—starter, main course, or dessert.

The twist? Every course is hosted in a different kitchen, and participants move from one location to another, meeting new people along the way.

The evening is a journey of flavors, conversations, and friendships, culminating in an after-dinner party where the entire Gie?en-kocht community gathers to celebrate. For someone new to Giessen, it’s an incredible way to connect with locals, explore culinary traditions, and create lasting memories.

Bringing Indian Flavors to the Table

I was assigned to prepare dessert with my cooking partner Julia Franz in her kitchen. After brainstorming, we decided to introduce our fellow participants to a taste of India by making Carrot Halwa.

This traditional Indian dessert, made with grated carrots, milk, sugar, and cardamom, is a rich and aromatic treat often enjoyed at celebrations. We garnished it with almonds and pistachios, adding a delightful crunch.

The preparation itself was an enjoyable process. Explaining the recipe’s cultural significance to our guests turned it into a learning experience for everyone involved. I was cooking the dish first time! So it was an experiment for me as well. Checking the sugar, heating, discussing with the cooking partner and flatmates, it was new and very different than cooking alone.

Watching our guests savor the dessert and express their curiosity about Indian cuisine was one of the highlight of the evening, a sweet addition to general conversation. It reinforced the idea that food has a universal language—one that speaks of curiosity, enmeshed with history, and shared experiences as a community.

Beyond the Kitchen

What sets Gie?en-kocht apart is its commitment to inclusion and diversity. The event brings together people from various cultural and professional backgrounds, creating a space where everyone feels welcome. It became an occasion about building bridges and breaking barriers.

The organizers deserve immense credit for fostering an atmosphere of openness and respect, ensuring that everyone can fully embrace the experience.

The After-Dinner Celebration

The evening concluded with a lively after-dinner party at Ulenspiegel. It was a joyous celebration of the connections we had built throughout the night.

Dancing, laughter, and conversations filled the room as strangers danced together. It was a reminder of how food can bring people together in the most meaningful ways.

Reflections

Participating in Gie?en-kocht was an unforgettable experience. It taught me that cooking isn’t just about following recipes, but a warm chat in the evening, opening up to different styles of cooking, a bit of experimentation, and more than that, socialising in a different setting with multiple people.

People are warm and kind to open their homes and hearts to strangers in a city that is busy. This was a time away from daily hubbub - the business, and just participating in something together.

It became a event about creating moments, sharing traditions, and building connections. For anyone in or around Giessen, I cannot recommend this event enough, join in next time. Excellent! We had something very similar in G?ttingen some years ago. Dr. Aditya Singh and I also cooked an Indian dessert called 'Rasmalai', I still remember the people and the food with whom we shared the appetizers, main course and dessert. Later on, I worked with one of the persons I had met that evening. Cannot agree more how magical cooking events can be, how they can bring together people from different backgrounds. It's great that Giessen offers these opportunities regularly.
