CUI for dummies (or not)
Dear specification engineers
Saw a insulation spec today with following sentence: “FEF* Insulation is a fully sealed insulation system designed to mitigate Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI)”.
Wouldn’t this be nice, specify the right insulation product and all your CUI problems are solved. Anyone with in-depth knowledge of CUI mitigation knows it’s not. If it was CUI would be solved decades ago. Hence my title it’s not for dummies. Sorry no offense
Having said this.....CUI mitigation involves a system aproach hand in hand with an inspection and maintenance strategy. And starts by designing a fit for purpose coating, insulation material and jacketing.
But a good spec also describes installation methods and QA/QC. This provides the minimum requirements necessary to allow after commissioning the asset-owner to implement a good mitigation strategy.
*) Goes also for other insulation materials. Remember CUI has been reported under all types of insulation materials

7 年Mr. Sentjens is fully right in his meaning about the different insulation systems. Most of the problems occure when application is of a very poor quality. But don't forget to choose the best possible insulation system for some specific installations and then search for the specialists in your company for the right application. Not every insulator is qualified to apply all insulation systems. It’s an underestimated part of a project. The right People on the right place to make a project a succes, even the insulators and their managers are very important to accomplish an insulation project to a good end.
