CUET 2022: University admissions through CUET
What is CUET??
The CUET is the Common University Entrance Examination Test, earlier known as CUCET Central Universities Common Entrance Test. Until 2022 each central university had a distinct mechanism for taking admission into their UG and PG programs. In order to unify this process, CUET was introduced by the Education ministry. CUET will bring it down to a single-window pane, making admissions more streamlined and student-friendly, eliminating entrance exams of varying difficulty levels.?
Why was CUET needed?
Due to the immense weightage of the 12th marks, not each student had the equality of opportunity in approaching their dream university. With CUET coming into existence this so-called “Cut-off system” has been removed. End of the subjective biases, now a student can focus on their domain subjects. It will also save the candidate’s time, effort, and money towards the payment of multiple exam fees. The cut-off system of some universities has come to end, now admission will be on the merit of the CUET examination.
Particulars of the CUET
CUET examination will be conducted in online mode which is a computer-based test, containing MCQs type questions. The exam will be held in the first and second week of July 2022. It will be carried out in two slots on different days based on the subjects chosen by the candidates. The duration of the first slot is 45 to 195 minutes and the duration of the second slot is 45 to 225 minutes.
The candidates can take a maximum of 4 tests in Slot 1 which will be held in the morning shift. These tests include one language from Section IA, a maximum of two domain-specific subjects from Section II, and one General Test from Section III.
The CUET 2022 examination for slot 2 will be held in the afternoon and candidates can take a maximum of 5 tests, one language from Section IA & IB and a maximum of four domain-specific subjects from Section II and two languages from Section IA & IB and a maximum of three domain-specific subjects from Section I.
The organizing committee that is NTA has stated that there will be 45 central universities that come under CUET. Some top universities that are participating in CUET are: the University of Delhi, BHU, JNU, University of Allahabad, Aligarh Muslim University, Jamia milia Islamic, and many more.
Format and structure of the CUET 2022?
CUET will have the following sections;

Section 1 will consist of languages that have to be attempted in 45 minutes and are further divided into two;
1 A will have 13 languages (regional languages such as English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, and so on) from which attempting one language is mandatory.
1 B will have 19 languages (foreign languages such as French, Spanish, German, and so on) and it has to be pursued if a candidate seeks to study it in an undergraduate program.
Section 2 will test the candidates with domain subjects to which they are seeking admission and the time given will be 45 minutes for each subject. Domain subjects will include all subjects from every stream of class 12th i.e. subjects from science, humanities, and commerce streams.
Some colleges will have section 2 B which will include new subjects, for instance, DU has divided this section into two parts - 2A and 2B. 2A is a list of 18 subjects that were already on offer in DU before CUET’s introduction. 2B is a list of 19 new subjects such as Engineering Graphics, Entrepreneurship, Knowledge Tradition, and Practices India, Fine Arts/Visual Arts, and so on.
Section 3 Last section is designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge. However, this section is not compulsory as this will be attempted by a student only if it’s stated as a requirement for the program he/she is applying to. Students will have an hour to attempt Section III, which will be based on current affairs, general knowledge, quantitative reasoning, and the application of basic mathematical concepts.
Possible challenges?
The introduction of a CUET for all undergraduate admissions will effectively centralize the assessment of learning achievements through 12 years of schooling by one Central government agency which perforce has to be based on a common curriculum. While different State boards may continue to exist and have their own curricula suited to their specific conditions, their curricula and examinations would effectively be rendered redundant if the performance of the board examinations were to be given no weightage in undergraduate admissions.
Since this exam would be conducted for the first time, there would be a chaotic situation among the students regarding exam patterns and the procedure. Also, there would be pressure on the organizing committees to conduct this exam in a fair way.
