CU mission on full display this #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday showcases credit union mission

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving and is gearing up for the rest of the holiday season! If you're like me, your inbox was flooded with "Black Friday", "Small Business Saturday" and "Cyber Monday" sales. The deals are a great way to kick off holiday shopping – or treat yourself. But it's "Giving Tuesday" that's still on my mind as we close out the first week in December.

I saw so many examples of credit unions living out our mission this Tuesday. But the thing is, we don't need "Giving Tuesday" to step up and help our communities. EVERY day is an opportunity to make a difference. I love seeing the credit union difference in action, so keep sharing what you're doing this holiday season!

Cooperative superpowers on full display at AACUL meeting

Our cooperative superpowers are our most powerful tool. When you see it in action you realize the incredible potential we have together as one movement. This week, I enjoyed participating in an annual example of our superpowers – American Association of Credit Union League's (AACUL) winter meeting. The program brings together Leagues, credit unions and other system leaders to rally our advocacy agenda and collaborate on other credit union priorities.

Next up is CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference

February will be here before you know it! Make sure you're registered to participate in the year's largest credit union conference where our cooperative superpowers are on full display. We just announced that Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley will keynote during Tuesday's main session.

360-degree advocacy

  • Remittances: After pressure from CUNA, Leagues and credit unions, the CFPB has increased its remittance threshold to 500 transfers – a step in the right direction but we still see room for improvement.
  • Buying banks: I sent a follow up letter to FDIC Chairman Jelena McWilliams responding to concerns she raised in a House Financial Services Committee hearing on credit unions buying banks.
  • NCUA oversight: NCUA Chairman Rodney Hood testified before the House and Senate this week on oversight of financial regulators. We engaged and shared what NCUA does well and where we want to see changes.
  • Data security and privacy: We're pushing for a nationwide standard on data security and privacy and support a discussion draft produced in the Senate Commerce Committee.
  • Housing finance: We argue credit unions should gain wider access to the FHA lending program so that more Americans can benefit from credit union-backed mortgages.

Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union? seen by MILLIONS!

The Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union? campaign has reached millions of people across the country in less than a year. And when I say millions – I mean MILLIONS!

  • 385 million impressions
  • 103 million completed video views

The most impressive part is that we're just getting started

We're in 14 states now, but many more are slated to launch the campaign in early 2020. I really can't wait to unlock the full potential of this campaign – but right now I think we should just let these numbers soak in.

Last chance to nominate a credit union superhero

Do you know a hero among us in the credit union movement? I bet you know lots! Credit Union Magazine's Credit Union Hero Award gives us the chance to recognize those with unmatched dedication to our members. Today is the deadline. So, nominate a deserving individual now for Credit Union Hero of the Year, sponsored by Symitar.

All the best,

Jim
