CTRL, Altman, Delete. CTRL Z.
Recap, Nov, 2023.

CTRL, Altman, Delete. CTRL Z.

We thought it was difficult to keep up with all the new advances in AI and Spatial Computing. But, in November we saw some very 'interesting' seat-shuffling in some of the most interesting tech companies.

Let's get into it...

OpenAI:

We saw the sudden sacking, re-appointment, and restoration of Sam Altman at Open AI, as someone else took his place for all of a few days.

As my colleague Hoff noted:

OpenAI fired Sam Altman as CEO, Mira Murati installed
Mira Murati installed as new CEO

  • We at first were scratching our heads at this decision by the governance board, wondering how and why they had the audacity and authority to fire the talisman.
  • We saw Microsoft pounce and acquire him directly in to the company to lead new efforts in AI (as if he wasn't already)
  • The staff at Open AI signing a letter which backed Sam Altman, with some 600+ signatures (out of ~750 staff)
  • Along the way finding out that Altman has no equity stake in OpenAI (How does that happen?)
  • Then the restoration of him as CEO, back in the role he was doing in the first place.

So, it turns out that on and off the screen AI will keep up us hooked with the dramas around its develoopment.

Generative AI:

Sticking with the topic for a moment. The generative AI scene has produced a number of increadibly promising results this month. Just look at some examples:

3D basic modelling, Scene description to 3D environment.

Spatial, passthrough to 3D.

Text description, basic shapes to 2D Image.

Already commercially available in Adobe Photoshop Beta, generative fill.

Substitution. Raw footage provides the prompt and is substitued for AI generated content.

Hardware:

Not to be out done by AI advancements, hardware manufacturers also provided some interesting updates and new releases this month:

A new Varjo eye-wateringly expensive offering.

Apple heightens rollout anticipation, by defining what 'early '24' means.

But, aslo Vision Pro 2 hits the news.

Magic Leap publishes a major update for its second generation device.

Amazon preview Echo Frames, conentrating on style over function in the short term.

Thanks once again, if you've scrolled this far, and I hope you've enjoyed and possibly learned something, from a quick look back through Nov. 2023.

Please do subscribe if you'd like to see these recaps periodically - about once a month.

Do add a comment or two for constructive feedback, it's always welcome and sometimes acted upon. ??

Have a wonderful few weeks and I hope to see you here again.

Dan.
