Is CT ideal for wall thickness measurement?

Is CT ideal for wall thickness measurement?

Added value of CT for wall thickness measurement

1. Holistic 3D analysis for complex geometries

"Faster & further" - this is the motto for both electric vehicles and combustion engines. Low part weight combined with high mechanical strength is required. This results in complex geometries that push most testing methods to their limits. Optical and tactile measurement methods only work if the walls are freely accessible. In ultrasonic or X-ray testing, there must be no overlapping so that wall thicknesses can be measured correctly. Industrial CT overcomes these limitations by generating detailed 3D images of the entire component. The internal & external structure is thus fully visualized.

2. Precision & reliability

CT enables non-destructive, high-precision inspection of wall thicknesses on the entire component, including inaccessible internal areas. In addition, a CT scan can address multiple inspection tasks simultaneously, e.g. inspection of joints, inspection of cavities for burrs, core residues & chips & inspection of machining surfaces. This ensures complete quality control that cannot be achieved with conventional methods.

3. Real-time evaluation & series testing

To ensure the robustness of large quantities, Microvista performs a fully automatic & economical measurement of the wall thickness at specified points on each component. NOK components can be sorted out immediately thanks to real-time evaluation. The inspection can be carried out at your production site with a mobile CT solution or via your CT via the cloud. Alternatively, components can also be sent to Microvista. Microvista carries out both series and individual part inspections in its in-house CT laboratory.

Practical examples

Strong variations in the wall thickness of a stator housing

Variations in the wall thickness of the stator housing can lead to breakthroughs and total failure of the vehicle. The CT scan shows the strongly fluctuating wall thickness of the housing, which does not meet the quality requirements.

Target/actual comparison of the wall thickness of a cooling hose

With a CT scan, the wall thickness of a cooling hose could be precisely measured & critical deviations quickly identified & visualized in colour.
