CSE's Clean Energy Insights #6: EHS & Quality Perspective in Cleantech

As our industry continues its rapid pace of growth, it’s not just what we do but also how we do it that matters. Rigorous environmental, health, safety, and quality management (EHS & Quality) is critical to building a clean and sustainable future with integrity. We’re fortunate to have Mike Mosher leading oversight and strategic direction for EHS & Quality at CS Energy.

In this newsletter, Mike offers a behind-the-scenes look at his role as CS Energy’s Director of EHS & Quality, the importance of EHS & Quality standards, and how he uses his expertise to ensure successful projects.

Mike arrived at CS Energy through positive word of mouth. He heard a CS Energy employee (now a colleague) speak highly about the industry as a whole and CS Energy specifically. The colleague's enthusiasm was contagious, and when Mike began to explore the field more deeply, he realized he had an opportunity to build a career in an area that aligned with his personal interests and beliefs. He continues to enjoy the renewable energy industry’s dynamic and constantly evolving nature.

In his role, Mike leads oversight and strategic direction for EHS & Quality, a job that entails managing risks, driving continuous improvement, and maintaining alignment with the company’s vision. He notes that managing subcontractors to ensure they comply with stringent safety and quality standards is an industry wide challenge.

To ensure compliance and uphold CS Energy’s culture of quality and safety, CS Energy requires all subcontractors to undergo a thorough prequalification process. This quality check includes evaluations of current and past performance, as well as their processes and programs.?

Once subcontractors are approved, CS Energy takes a collaborative approach to working with them on EHS & Quality, offering:?

• Training, including a thorough review of CS Energy’s programs and expectations?
• Invitations and opportunities to join in pre-task and preparatory meetings
• Partnership in problem-solving. For example, CS Energy conducts regular performance audits, and if any issues are identified, Mike and his team work together with the subcontractors to address and rectify the issues.

Mike is involved in every stage to ensure safety and quality across a project’s life cycle:?

• Project development stage – CS Energy spends time upfront to fully scope the project and prepare resources effectively.?
• ?Planning stage – Mike collaborates with project teams to create their EHS & Quality and commissioning plans.?
• ?Construction stages – With Mike at the helm, CS Energy conducts audits and inspections throughout all construction phases, offering ongoing support and guidance.

A significant aspect of Mike's role is balancing the need for rapid project delivery without sacrificing safety and quality standards. Engaging in every project phase, from initial planning and design through execution, completion, and post-project review, allows him to strike this balance. He is able to identify potential challenges early and mitigate them before they become issues, adapt strategies, and reallocate resources quickly.
