Lattice cryptography might be the key to a quantum-safe future
Earlier this year, the National Institute of Standards and Technology announced four finalists in its quest for a post-quantum cryptography standard. Among them, three utilize "lattice cryptography," a method inspired by lattices, which are regular patterns of dots in space. Lattice cryptography , along with other post-quantum possibilities, deviates significantly from current standards. However, they all share a common reliance on mathematical asymmetry. Unlike many existing cryptographic systems that depend on multiplication and factoring, which can be efficiently executed by computers, post-quantum methods introduce a level of complexity that would require centuries to decipher a large cryptic number into its prime components. This asymmetry ensures that encoding secrets becomes easy while decoding them remains extremely challenging.
Floating solar panels offer numerous benefits
Solar power is set to play a significant role in the fight against climate change, but its implementation requires vast amounts of land. However, a promising solution lies in the concept of floating solar panels positioned on reservoirs. This approach has the potential to generate up to a third of the world's electricity without occupying additional land, while also preventing the evaporation of trillions of gallons of water.
Known as "floating photovoltaic " systems, these installations offer numerous advantages. Reservoir surfaces have limited alternative uses, making them a relatively cost-effective option for solar panel placement. Furthermore, utilizing reservoirs for solar power frees up land for other crucial purposes. Additionally, since these bodies of water are typically located near major urban centers, which are the primary consumers of electricity, the distribution of power becomes more streamlined.
China sends first civilian astronaut to space
Last week, China achieved a significant milestone in its ambitious space program by sending its inaugural civilian astronaut into orbit. The launch of the Shenzhou-16 mission, aimed at conducting the second in-orbit crew rotation for its space station, marked another noteworthy advancement. Among the crew members of Shenzhou-16 is Gui, a professor at Beihang University, a prestigious aeronautics institution in China. Notably, Gui holds the distinction of being the first Chinese civilian to embark on a spaceflight, distinguishing him from all previous astronauts who have primarily hailed from China's People's Liberation Army.
Longevity enthusiasts want to create their own independent state
For millennia, humans have pursued the elusive concept of eternal youth. However, progress in this area has been notably sluggish. Despite numerous companies dedicated to discovering methods to slow down or reverse the aging process, conducting studies to determine the efficacy of such treatments in extending human lifespan is exceptionally challenging and costly. Complicating matters further, the World Health Organization does not classify aging as a disease. Nevertheless, a community of individuals has emerged, actively exploring an alternative path , potentially even advocating for the establishment of an independent state. They assert that aging is morally undesirable and view it as a problem in dire need of a solution. These individuals perceive existing regulations as obstacles hindering progress and advocate for a different approach to tackle the issue of aging.
SEC sues largest Crypto exchange Binance
Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, faced a fresh lawsuit filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The federal regulatory body levied 13 charges against the exchange and its founder, Changpeng Zhao, accusing them of violating U.S. securities law and asserting that Binance operated an unlawful exchange. The charges encompass several allegations, including the operation of unregistered exchanges, broker-dealers, and clearing agencies. The SEC also claims that Binance misrepresented trading controls and supervision on its Binance US platform, as well as engaged in the unregistered offer and sale of securities. Binance pushed back against the complaint, calling it a move to unilaterally define the crypto market structure.?
Apple launched the much-awaited "Vision Pro" mixed reality headset
Apple has officially unveiled its long-awaited AR headset after months of speculation. Priced at $3,499, which is three times the cost of Meta's most expensive device, the headset is set to hit the market in early 2024. Resembling ski goggles in appearance, this innovative device combines elements of virtual reality and augmented reality, enabling users to witness digital content overlaid in their real-world environment. Through the AR headset, users have the ability to project apps into their surroundings virtually and interact with them using eye movements, hand gestures, and voice commands. Notably, Apple has confirmed that the device will support popular applications such as the Disney+ streaming service, Microsoft Corp's Office suite, and apps developed by Adobe Inc.
