Cryogenics is the science that addresses the production and effects of very low temperatures.

The word originates from the Greek words 'kryos' meaning "frost" and 'genic' meaning "to produce."

Under such a definition, it could include all temperatures below the freezing point of water (0 C).

Cryogenics is the study of the production and effects of extremely low temperatures, typically below 120 K.

Cryogenics has many applications, including:

  • Scientific research
  • Industrial gases
  • Medicine
  • Spacecraft

Cryogenicists use temperature scales like Kelvin and Rankine, in addition to Fahrenheit and Celsius.
